Did my first dip dying of some wallets I'm piecing together. All I've read is that the dye may bleed out with regular use. I'm looking at both resolene and carnauba wax to seal the projects. Any help on how these would work. And would a resolene application prevent the leather from developing a patina?

Thanks!

I don't think the resolene will cause it not to patina. It should still get patina with age/ wear.

Maybe I'm wrong. I am sure others will chime in on this.

Thanks, I've seen some mixed messages on the internet about it. Would carnauba wax act as a good enough seal to prevent any dye bleeding? Since they are wallets, I'm not super concerned about them being waterproofed as exposure should be fairly minimal.

I have not used carnuba wax. I do not think carnauba wax will seal leather from dye bleed out/ rub off.

I use either Satin Shene or Super Shene from Tandy & it seems to do a good job for me.

I personally think carnauba wax might make dye rub off/bleed out even worse.

He's got this one right . . . at least that has been my 20+ year experience . . .

There is no wax that will prevent dye rub off.  A 50/50 application of Resolene and water will do the job though.  And I've never figured out how it does it . . . but if you notice on your leather . . . there are lighter and darker spots . . . you would not have gotten so much of that had you  given the leather a light coating of neatsfoot oil . . . but again . . . not sure how resolene does it . . . but it also smoothes out some of that.

Make sure you post some finish shots of it/them before you send em up, up, and away.

May God bless,

Dwight

I cased with a spray/mister bottle before the dip and I'm guessing that the application was uneven. which resulted in the darker spots. I'd read that nearfoot should be applied after but you would recommend prior to?

Should be getting to stich-up tonight or tomorrow so I'll post when done.

Neatsfoot oil before dying generally has given me a smoother . . . more even color . . . especially with Saddle Tan.  Oiling afterwards just gives the leather a bit more softness and pliability . . . at least that has been my overall experience in 20 years.

Wet leather has always given me bad dye resullts . . . I know others don't have that opinion . . . but that has been my experience.  I case for stamping . . . nothing else.

May God bless,

Dwight
