Thanks for the links!!  It turns out I was way overthinking it, lol.  This edge is very easy, and the corners aren't as big a problem as i thought.

You can also go for slightly rougher look by skiving the edges of the leather tape really thin and leaving them as-as.

Except for the skiving bit :-)

so how much extra work for just aesthetics?

Exactly my thoughts about tooling, carving, hand-dying and painting leather  I just use pre-dyed chrome-tan without adornments, but with some effort put in for finishing edges.
Everybody has their own preferences for aesthetics and how much time and effort they'd want to invest.

That edge will work great and provide some stiffness to the pieces.

I am pretty much cutting my teeth on Chrome Tan with this project. I love to learn new things, so I like to try to add something i havent done when making my personal stuff. That way, if I do want to make to sell, I have a decent pattern and skill set for it. I sell just as many or maybe more plain leather projects as I do tooled leather, and most of my personal stuff is plain or pretty close to it lol, Now that's my story lol,  really my tooling sucks so no one would buy it !!!!!

Here is one of my black powder shooting bags. I used 'Buck-tanned' cow to bind the edges.

I like that pinked edge. Did you do that by hand? A new possibles bag is another thing I need to make.

I've seen leather sold in strips for these exact style of edge or tubing. If I can only recall where though.

If you want to do it that way, use a 1-2oz veg tan cut to the right width to fold around. Burnish and stitch like normal at that point. Makes it simple and will add a little extra firmness to the edge. I think it would make the bag look more complete. You'll be able to manipulate the corners with veg tan a little easier by wetting it, but you may still be folding wrinkles as you glue. There's some good videos on the tube with techniques. A good binge folder is necessary to do the corners neatly.Use Feibings white glue, double stick doesn't always stick to chrome or oil tans.

Skive and roll looks good when done right. But I prefer the method I mentioned above. It'll look good, and I'm my opinion is easier

Or....... you could just use edge paint but that's kinda cheating imo 🤣

By the way, I typed a long answer for the skive and roll method, then saw your question.

I realize the purpose for canvas and that it's not really even needed with leather, so how much extra work for just aesthetics

So I deleted five minutes of taking my phone's keyboard just to do it all over again with a different answer lol

No, I used one of those roller cutters. I cut the pinked edge then measure over and cut the straight.
