This morning, there are 602 "Users Online", of which 6 are logged in. This isn't at all uncommon.

I know some of that is going to be bot traffic but how do we get the 99% to actually sign up, log in and post something??

I hate to suggest one of those "Log In With ..." buttons. I have no idea how much of your soul you give up to have one on your website. But if it gets people to engage instead of lurk ...

This place is the best archive of Leathercraft on the net. And it's not subject to some petulant techie or CEO deleting things.

I'm on another forum that was inundated with bots. They put a Captcha to verify you're a human at the login and that eliminated just about all bots. I don't know what's involved to do that but it is one solution to the problem. Maybe it would be a good idea here.

Well, Boss Lady has the bots that register to spam us pretty well down. For the moment ...

Posting activity here of late has been pretty quiet, even with a steady trickle of new users registering.

Even a few short years ago when I first joined there was so much activity, it was hard to keep up. Maybe it's just seasonal.

I don't know, maybe after 20 years, most of the questions have been answered.

Multiple reasons.

I think forums are down everywhere, the new has worn off, and the division created a few years back is still there quietly in the hearts of many.  YouTube also takes its share of folks who would rather just watch than participate.

Any way i tried tap dancing. Maybe we should hire a band.

I also think people like the "one stop shopping" of (I hate to even type it) things like facebook. All their notifications in one place.  But then the social media service becomes the keeper of all your content and the gatekeeper of all your users. Ask the gun people how that's worked out. I exited fb when they took down firearms classifieds.

Even if we had a "Log In With fb" feature, then this site would lose control of it's user base.

But, if you guys are saying it's everywhere, maybe the tide will turn back.

We have a lot of traffic, but most of it is window shopping.

In today's world, most people don't want to have any kind of meaningful relationship and that extends to online. On FB, they only want to look without contributing or only contribute meaningless stuff like the hamburger they had for lunch at Culvers. No risk of starting a relationship, there. I'd bet the actual contributing percentage on FB is about the same as on forums. At least we have a core membership that keeps things going with actual content.
