Light Maul to replace my Stamping Stick

Recommended Posts

Here is my new 9oz maul. I actually broke my stamping stick, that was only about 30 years old. It died sooooo young!! My new little maul is 8" long, & 1.5" in dia. it has a segmented Mahogany handle with colored spacing material. The head is made out of Nylon. This handle shap fits MY hand just right. I've had some in the past that were too smallin the narrow part, making them kinda hard to hold on too. I'm sure I'm gonna get alot of use out of this one. I still think I'm gonna make a new Stamping Stick anyway. I have a Long,,,, way to go to catch up to Bob's (Hideponder) maul collection! Maybe one day... hehehe Take Care,,, Ed

Beautiful maul, Ed! Did you make it? The shape of the handle reminds me of Wayne Jueschke's mauls. Very nice.

Hi Everybody,, Thanks for all the nice compliments! Yes, it's something I make. The first one I made was about 7-8 years ago. I ordered the Nylon bar stock fom a supplier, where I only ordered 2 pieces, in different diameters, 3" long each. Somehow they sent me 3 feet in each of the diameters. After calling them back, they said to just keep the "extra". I still have quite a bit left. Maybe I should make some more? I believe the larger one comes in at around 14-16 oz.

Bob, I don't know who Wayne Jueschke is,,, but it's nice to have something compared to somebody elses work.

Thanks,,, Ed

Ed, Wayne is a tool maker who goes to all the leather shows. His mauls don't have the beautiful wood handles like you made on this one, they're leather like Barry's. The contour is what reminded me of Wayne's. I would think mauls like this one would be in high demand! Function is primary of course, but function and beauty is supreme! Who wouldn't want one of those on their bench? Really nice!

True..............True

I love my BK, but I would like a thick handle since my had almost goes around my BK twice. I know someone will mention something about how I am gripping it wrong, but that is how I get it comfortable for me. If you do make more, I would be interested in two handles to replace my BK handles. Just throwing it out there.

From a weight perspective, Barry King does make a 14oz. To my knowledge, it's his smallest.

I haven't kept a lot of pictures of mauls that we made but I was looking through my son's pictures and here are a couple that he did when we were first starting and testing different weights and such. Here's some that Garrett did 4-5 years ago. He has changed several things on the handle since then. One's out of mesquite and the other is out of mesquite, oak and padauk. The mesquite one is the very first handle that he created. We have since created a piece of all thread that we turn all of them (leather and wood on) as well as making a duplicating jig. The completed one was the first one that was made with the jig and threaded rod. The curves weren't exact so we changed to a different cutter to make the transition flow better.
