Rawhide Report post Posted March 26, 2009 I presume the stitching on these collars is done by hand ...http://leerburg.com/flatleathercollar.htm Could you achieve the same finish with a sewing machine? If so, what kind? They look machine sewn. There are many machines that can handle such a job. Although latigo is strong, it's fairly soft to a sewing machine. Some sewing machines are some old singers, Artisan, Cowboy, Cobra, adler...just to name a few names. Art might chime in on this one, he's a sewing machine expert. barra Report post Posted March 26, 2009 Ruthless. Here are the signs that tell me they are machine sewn. 1. Angle of the stitching ie right angles to the edge. 2. where the stitching starts and ends ie the little bit of thread poking out where the thread has been cut off at the end of the job. 3. Round holes made by the needle. 4. Sewing machine track marks left from the presser foot. 5. On a few places you can see where the lock stitch has formed the knot closer to the top (tensions). mulefool Report post Posted March 26, 2009 I believe it is machine stitched, too. I wonder why they didn't burn the thread where they ended. It seems like it would look cleaner and hold better.
ruthless Report post Posted March 26, 2009 Ok, thanks. Anyone know if I could get that kind of stitching with a Tippman?
Luke Hatley Report post Posted March 26, 2009 I have the cast iorn model and i get a perfect stich with Latigo Leather or thick Elk. Few problems with Veg Tan but it still sewed ok. I have a Sew Mo now. Like an Adler. 205-

DaveT Report post Posted March 29, 2009 Machine sewn without a doubt. The thread was cut with a pencil type soldering iron. It melts the end of the thread and forms that little mushroom head on it. Very distinctive if you've done it. A couple observations of these collars. 1. They did not edge bevel or finish the edges. Very hard on the dog's neck (I have dogs too.) edge the straps before assembly and it's easy to do (Don't edge the flesh side where you're folding over) and rub with paraffin wax to slick and seal. 2. The straps where run through a mechanical roller to put the bead lines on them. Quick and easy, just watch your hands! Dave T
