(I don't know who posted this one) they are both gone & I was wondering if they can be found & restored??? It's not the standard seat- it's a contoured banana-type seat off a Harley (maybe sportster or softtail). I've got the top piece (6-7 oz) tooled & cut (although I made the top piece oversize for trimming) & the sides I'm planning to make in 1 piece from 3-4 oz with an undersized cutout to be glued/ laced underneath the top piece. Afterward, it'll be wet/stretched/stapled & I'm hoping it'll all come together. Does this sound do-able? Would 2-3 oz be better than 3-4 for the side gusset, or should I stick with 3-4? How much overlap do you guys allow for gluing the two pieces together and lacing them- 1/2"? 3/8"? (I don't want to butt the pieces together- I want the top piece to overlap the side gusset for strength). I was hoping to look at & refer to the tutorials, but any help/assistance/ encouragement you can supply is greatly appreciated, believe me. Thank you. russ russ, i use 3-4oz and i use the top as a template for the side. i don't bother cutting the gusset under sized. i overlap 1/4" but that is what i like to use. i didn't make any reference in the "how too" i did as everyone pretty much has thier own spacing. i would suggest you try some different spacings on some scrap and see what you like. i also don't glue it. i just lace it together. i don't like staples and will never use them on a seat! use pop rivets. they hold better and i use aluminum or stainless rivets and don't worry about them rusting or pulling out Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I've only lurked for one day before signing up (that's a record)! I'm in the process of building my own chopper from the ground up and would like to do it all myself, including the seat. I think with the help I could get here it's quite doable. I barely know what questions to ask at this point, still trying to learn as much as possible cruising the site. IS there any chance of salvaging or restoring it? My bike is a Triumph, Yamaha, Harley, custom Hybrid (all the left over stuff I had in the garage). Kustomizer Report post Posted December 2, 2008 Sorry to bring up an old post, but I was about to post this very topic and would love to see the process on making a motorcycle seat, especially from the point of how much bigger should the leather be to lace and how do you meet the bottom piece of leather and top piece? Do you butt them up or overlap them? Do you attach the bottom piece of leather to the seat pan before you start lacing (which I think you do). And did I understand correctly that you use 3-4 oz. leather for a seat? And if there was anyway to bring up the "Jesus seat from start to finish" that would be fantastic, or if anyone has a good link (besides the Paul Cox link which I've seen) that shows the process from start to finish that would be great also.
