My way of viewing those LARGE posted images

Notes are for FireFox browser: If I just click on the small images on some topics, I get an image larger than my viewing area. Trying to scroll around does not work for me because I can't really visualize the project. But by right clicking on the huge image, I get a window that allows me to "View Selected Source". The window that opens has an http link in it which when you click on it, it fills and fits the window that was opened by clicking on the "View Selected Source". If you grab the corner of the window and adjust the size of the window, then the image is enlarged or shrunk as the window changes. If you then depress the Cntl and S keys at the same time you can name and save the adjusted image.

Attachments seem to come in many flavors and open differently. This may not work for all types.

Thanks, Bob. I always wonder why people post pictures that are bigger than a standard screen? I save the picture (only if I really want to see it) then resize it so that I can see it, at one time. I wish the folks that want to learn how to resize pics would read the threads on the subject and then ask for help if they need it. We all like to look at the pics, and those great big scrollbar pictures aren't any fun.

Johanna, I have a question to ask. How do I save an image now? I just used to click on "save image" before but now I don't have that option. I'm using Firefox.

The old forum used to properly resize the pics. Is it possible to turn this feature on on the new forum?

If you right-click the image before the detail box drops, you canselect 'View Image' and it will open the image in a new tab, scaled tofit your browser viewport. This is for Firefox only.

I'm not a FF user, so I don't even want to comment and lead someone astray. The most I do is glance at sites in FF now and then to compare to what I see in IE. Thanks for posting the FF help, guys- you know what works best for you.

Aaron, I've been setting up the new Gallery, and I've found settings to customize every thumbnail, regular pic and lightbox pic, but those same settings are nowhere to be found for forum posts and attachments. The old forum did have some settings. I will look around for a mod or ask someone who can write a script for some control of this. The pics that open too big annoy me, also, but I think people upload them that way because they don't know any better. If I could make the forum resize them automatically, they won't need to be taught or encouraged to do it themselves, and we won't be inconvenienced with the pics that would fill a 40 foot projection screen.

That is helpful, but it's still extra clicks, and images that are too large to fit on an average screen are also taking more storage space on the server than is necessary. I still think it is better if people just submit photos that are no more than 800-1000 pixels wide.

In the old days it was common to have to resize pics to post online. It is very rare to have to do it any more. If the forum does it then the pics will always be the correct size, no matter what or who uploades them.

As simple as it may or may not be to resize pics, many can not even do a basic picture insert into the forum. Resizing pics is a step above posting in dificulty.

I just switched over to IE to see if it is easier to save pics. I thought Firefox was slow but IE is so much slower! I think I'll go back to Firefox and forego the ease of saving pics.

FYI.....if anyone has trouble resizing photos I found a free download that works perfectly. It's called Prish Image Resizer. It's free and when installed all you have to do is right click on an image, select Prish resizer and select a size. It then makes a copy of the original and places it in a new file named "resized". Piece of cake!

I had to install Firefox on my computer just to be able to come here. IE was so slow there was no way you could come here and look around unless you liked looking at pages load. I know there was a lot of work that went into the change, but I would have not been able to continue visiting without the instalation of Firefox. It helps, but does not cure the trouble. I am on the internet all the time, this forum is the only place I have trouble.

Are you still experiencing a slow forum in IE? And all your Java updates are current? I am not aware of anyone else with the "slow forum" issue any more, so any details you have will be helpful.

When it was first switched, it was incredibly slow. After the changes were made it got better. Switching to Firefox helped too. I have just decided that waiting is part of visiting here. I see people comment on it every now and then, but think most are just polite and have chosen not to complain and bring it up over and over, sort of beating the dead horse thing. Possibly if there was a poll asking people how this forum compares to other sites they visit might shed more light. I would think it was me except I do OK virtually everywhere else. I do have an older computer, so possibly newer computers can mask the load times with faster processing speeds (I do have cable internet). I am not trying to complain, just commenting on it. I know I am not the only one dealing with this. In general, I have noticed when things are "improved" for various reasons, speed is almost always traded for the new features.

You are not alone Aaron, and I think your assessment is pretty good. It's still pretty slow for me too. Maybe it's partly my computer, but it's the slowest site I go to. I've also compensated by not reading nearly as many topics or opening a lot of pictures. I know a few other people that do the same. I'm not complaining because it's still the best resource we have and I know that a lot of work has gone into making it that and continues to go into it everyday.
