Business Name

ok i want to do leather work. I would like to make a saddle or 2. repair saddles. Make tack. I am also going to make pool cue cases as i play pool. I have had some requests. How does this name sound. We have this brook going thru our property called "Pokamoonshine Brook"

So how about "pokamoonshine Leatherworks" I want a makers stamp wih a name on it.

OK I'll be honest. I think that it's a bit dated. Kind of a 60's feel to it. The brook that flows there is probably not well known throughout the county let alone the state so it's kind of an inside thing.

Give us more information- where do you live, what state, state flower, bird or something.

What county do you live in, what's your last name, is there a prominent landmark or historical site/event near there etc

there are a lot of really good, professional people here. Some are in advertising, some in artwork, copywriters, etc.

Give us something to work with and I

I'm sure that we can come up with a really good name that reflects your work and lends itself to a great logo/makers stamp!

If it was me I would go for something shorter. I call mine Drygulch Leatherworks, and that is a lot to fit onto a Maker's stamp. You might need a pretty big stamp to get that in, and the bigger they are, the harder they are to use. The first thing I thought of was Pokemon when I read your idea. "Moonshine Leatherworks" would be easier for most folks to remember.

You can't get it absolutely right ... that's the only rule. JLS Leather gets calls, they want to talk to JL (who doesn't exist). Apparently, that looked to someone like JL's Leather (?).

ok I appreaciate the honesty. Last name is Zuzgo. not many of us around. I live in NH. Strafford County. There is another river not far up the roas called Mad River. NH is called the Granite State. all right don't laugh the state bird is the purple finch.

I would check on Mad River before i used that. I know their is or used to be a Mad River canoe company and they might give you problems about having a name close to theirs I'm guessing they have Mad River trademarked.

I'm also thinking of starting a small time business and I'll need a name too. So my question is, once you have a name, how do you go about checking to see if that name is already taken? I would think a Google search would be a good start, but is there a more comprehensive list to check?

Up here, you'd need to contact the county recorder to make sure no one else has registered that business name. There are income limits (forget what they are) but under "so much" is a "hobby" and not required to register. Then, you'll have a sole proprietorship, a partnership, an LLC, an S corporation, a couple kinds of C corporation....

Most of which is aimed at you getting a pretty name to make you not feel so bad about Uncle Sam getting his cut

OH, yeah ... business names ... there's a fella here in town, pretty good carpenter from what I hear. Used his last name for the business. I've never said anything, but "Doolittle Constructon" just doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. Plus, gettin' socked inna eye kinda sucks ...

a bussiness name ..........a very long time ago i received a refund check from a known supplier.

I went to the bank that i have an account with to cash the check , the account is in my name,

the bank has no account for "Wolf River Leather". It turned into a long drawn out process to get the check cashed. So i just use my given name.something to think about.

A couple of points that I have come across in the UK are that, if you open a business bank account the bank charges you for every transaction and action they take (like paying-in cheques or cash, counting coins, etc). If you open a personal account, the majority of banking services are free (not that anything is really 'free' - but they don't charge over and above the normal account charges). If your business has a business name, it's obviously a business account and they charge accordingly. So if your business is just 'J Smith', you can open a personal account without the charges. Though I don't think this is illegal, it is seen as 'sharp practice'.

Second, if you have a business as a sole trader/proprietor you have to clearly state on any business cards, letterheads, etc, who you are, such as 'Whiplash Leatherworks - Proprietor J Smith' or 'J Smith trading as Whiplash Leatherworks'.

It's probably all different over your way anyhow but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I use my Name for my Land Survey business. I am a sole proprietor. but I don't want to use my name for a leather business. In NH you can use a DBA (doing business as). I think I can still have checks made out to Mad River and deposit them that way. Will have to check it out. I think you can go to the State web site and do a business name check.

I'm voting for Mad River too.

Are you on AZ Billiards by chance? Some great pool cue case makers that do some posting there as well. I got in to leather crafting just to make cue cases. The minute I sat down to do some tooling I loved it. Best wishes!
