Adding Felt Lining?

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about adding a felt lining to my holsters to help protect the firearm's finish.... I have never attempted this and am not 100% on the best way to go about adding it.... does anyone have any tips, mainly for bonding the felt to the leather, they could pass my way that would help?

You will likely get a number of people with differant opinions about this, but it is my understanding if the gun is going to be a show gun and not carried, this can work. If the gun is going to be carried frequently the felt will attract and hold dust. The dust becomes an abrasive and will damage the finish on the gun.

I'll go further than electrathon.

Don't do it. The felt will not only attract dust but also moisture. Even a safe queen would not be safe in such a thing.

thanks guys.... i've actually told my customers who have requested it that the felt interior can wind up causing more finish damage than the finished leather interior....

however, they insist on having the felt lining.... i'm not sure whether i should just use contact cement to bond it to the leather or sew it in?

If you are going to do it you should contact cement it in and sew the perimiter.

If you are doing this for a customer it may be a good idea to have them sign a statement that they understand this is likely to harm their gun.

Maybe another kind of lining would work better. I know that to the untrained eye (such as myself) dyed pigskin lining looks the same as felt. If there is another material that would be better than felt you may be able to convince the customer to let you use that.

I do know that sewing is important. Without it the lining will start to come up right away
