What is going on were the two bags meet and the lace meets, how did you achieve that flare out then blend in look?

I dampened the leather to fold the gusset out for gluing.as far as the center, the two sides are hand sewn to the center I punched the holes in one gusset, glued it to the center then glued the other side of the bag, used a sewing awl to put the holes the rest of the way through.
