Hey guys and gals, I am working on a quick rush project per say for a buddies son's birthday. I didnt know it was gonna be this friday so I am trying to piece together a project (gift) for him rather then go and buy something.

Well I happened on to a picture drawing of an idea and started sketching and this is pretty much what I came up with. I have not tooled in a very long time so this was a very good refresher.

Its going to be a biker style wallet when I am finished, its 7" by 7.5".

What do you guys think of the outside of it so far? Decent idea or should I scrap the outside portion and try again. Sorry for the crummy pic, the little whitish speckles you see are the leather tone and aren't really apparent when looking at it in person.

Oh yeah its a saddle tan base, with the robe gone over once with ox blood, then I went over the whole project with mahogany for the dark over layer. I oiled it but have not sealed it yet.

Thanks everyone and I will post the finished result.

One thing I realized I already messed up on is the design ends right on the fold which causes the cut line on the outside of the design to want to spread. Sure it will last a good long time but not something I like doing as it will cause the leather to split in this area. Kind of bummed about it but oh well.

Well finished it up tonight/morning. I think this is the fastest Ive done a project like this, just about 2 days, luckily I wasnt working much lol.

I dont have a chain for it so he can get that himself but everything else is finished.

I lined everything with black deer liner. The belt strap and the retention strap used 5/32 lace and the wallet got 1/8 lace dark brown on both. Trying to use up my tejas stuff so I can get some roo lace.

I ran into a problem lacing the wallet portion because for some reason I started off wrong. So when I got to the end it didnt work for the normal joining method so I kind of had to make it up with a little over lacing and finagling so it doesnt look great but it will work for now.

Hiya Mate, this looks realy nice and about a hundred years old.. what did you use to do the background not seen this before, also did you block dye it to get the colour effect ... looks very effective

and yeah its block dyed or however you call it. I dyed the entire thing tan, went over the robe portion with some reds, then I just use a cotton shirt piece balled up and dipped slightly in some black or dk brown. I really like the effect when I can use it. Plus over time it wears really nicely.

Leatheroo its a fun stamp that is pretty versatile. It can be dyed like I did it and it also takes to antiquing very well resulting in the opposite color patter. Oh and its easy to use since its a random type pattern you dont have to spend as much effort to get a good look with it.

i've made straps,belts, braclets, etc before, but i am a newbie to tooling, and i just wanted to thank you for showing the matting tool... i have always wondered, i've seen that sort-of finish before, i knew how to do the dye part(s), and never put 2+2 together for some reason about the background (i always thought it was a leather texture instead)... and when you mentioned it, it was the proverbial light bulb/'i could've had a v8 moment' that happened... so.... thank you...
