John at Byson Report post Posted July 3, 2010 Anyone any idea as to what this is EXACTLY ? Obviously it is a hammer of some sort and probably a cobbler's tool (though we use it for flattening the seams on bike kit) But I need to know EXACTLY what it is called so I can source another one :-) Sorry about the quality of the picture :-)

celticleather Report post Posted July 4, 2010 John As Luke says, in the US this is called a Fitter's Hammer, and is available from C S Osbourne (http://www.csosborne.com/NO1999.HTM). The nearest thing I've seen in the UK is called a Smasher, from Abbey Saddlery (http://www.abbeysaddlery.co.uk/product_detail.cfm?id=FS027). albane Report post Posted July 4, 2010 I purchased a couple of these at The Hide House. At first they seemed like a waste of space in my tool box but after using it for a while It now lives on my work bench. Enough said

I actually found Osborne's catalog about 20:00 last night. All I need now is a UK supplier :-)
celticleather Report post Posted July 5, 2010 (edited) John I know that Abbey Saddlery and H Webber (http://www.hwebber.c...craft_tools.htm) stock some Osborne tools, but not necessarily what you're looking for. Looks like you may end up doing a little importing! (Which may be the cheaper option, because most importers just double the price when they re-sell.) JerryLevine Report post Posted July 6, 2010 John I know that Abbey Saddlery and H Webber (http://www.hwebber.c...craft_tools.htm) stock some Osborne tools, but not necessarily what you're looking for. Looks like you may end up doing a little importing! (Which may be the cheaper option, because most importers just double the price when they re-sell.) Terry John, cowboyjohn, who lives in Scotland, imports Weaver products. You could always try coordinating with a friend or colleague who's going to the States, by posting it to their US address. That way you only pay customs charges when they return to the UK, rather than being hit by the triple whammy of hideous postage, customs charges and the Post Office's 'handling charge'! If you go for that, make sure you leave enough time for the package to reach your friend. The US is a big place and postage takes longer than it does over here. You should also make sure you friend takes the fitting hammer out of its US postal packaging before putting it in their luggage, so that he/she can say he knows what he packed when asked at the airport. All the best, Jerry
amuckart Report post Posted July 6, 2010 I see Frank Jones over on the HCC forum has sorted you for a source of these in the UK, but I thought I'd just append a little info on here for future searchers. As far as I know these were originally shoemakers tools and are variably called a "fitters hammer", "closers hammer" and "paste hammer".
