Line 24 snaps = the Devil

Recommended Posts

Ok, just venting. I just got done destroying a good holster trying to get the bottom pieces on double thick 8/9oz leather. It was close, I compressed, got it closer but in the end, the things just didn't work. :ranting2::ranting2: I waited 3 weeks for this order to get here!

I guess the upnote is the top parts went together like they were suppose to. So at least I got what looks like snaps

Who makes long post line 24 snaps? 3/16" just doesn't cut it.

Stolhman book has a tip regarding short posts, use a french edger to recess the backside of the hole, apparently does not weaken the area too much as long as you don't cut away to much.

Thanks Jordan. I don't have french edger but I did recess the hole (I remembered reading that here on the site) and I still couldn't get it. I'm sure part of that difficulty is my inexperience with these things :head_hurts_kr:

Not really, Shorts. The line 24s are a real bear. They're either too long or not long enough (I especially have problems with the cap parts, not the bottom parts- I suspect your problems were with the bottom parts, NOT with the caps, though). The cap posts tend to roll off to the side for me if I use a hand setter, but I generally don't have a problem with the bottoms (if the leather is not too thick).

If some manufacturer would make line 24s with posts that are in proportion to each other (in other words, the cap section posts would be shorter & the bottom section posts would be just a tad longer), & also in different sizes, that would solve the problems from the getgo.

For some reason, I have absolutely no problems with the line 20s (& there are also short & standard posts out there for the line 20s, too).

Whinewine, you said it about needing and not having a variety of sizes. Searching the vendors last night I noticed I'm going to have to buy several packs of sizes to mix the tops and bottoms for the lengths I need. I'm going to have snaps everywhere! Guess its time to get the tackle box I've been anticipating :D

Shorts- I so feel your pain! Now whenever I buy snaps or rivets I always buy the longest available and then cut them down myself. If they are too long they "fold-over" and if they are too short they don't hold! I like to assemble the piece and see how much I have to cut off then use a Dremel with cut-off wheel to trim the "post". This method works good for very thick or an unusual thickness.
