Members 8thsinner Posted July 30, 2010 Members Report Posted July 30, 2010 Just got a new customer last night that wants a 6 foot bull whip made thats weighted. So I need to find lead dust fast, and it can't be just regular lead shot, I need the fine stuff as she is paying premium. Can someone please recommend me a supplier, I have tried a few leather places and i tried search here but nothing came up. UK would be best and I need enough to do two whips Any idea how much I would need? Quote Doing the right thing is bleeding for the cause. Website Facebook
Members iwannabeacowboy Posted July 30, 2010 Members Report Posted July 30, 2010 If you can't find the dust, maybe try grinding some up? Or try melting some down. Quote I'm never to old to learn about all the things life brings along.

Members BIGGUNDOCTOR Posted July 31, 2010 Members Report Posted July 31, 2010 If you look around you may be able to find some number 12 (.050 dia) shotgun shot. Be careful if you grind up your own, wear a respirator, not a dust mask. Lead is an ingestion/breathing hazard. How much do you need? I have a friend who has reclaimed a lot of lead from shooting ranges, and he ends up with a dust that floats on the lead, so it is not quite as heavy, but it is heavy. You are looking for bird shot for the .357 magnum pistol round. this I believe is the closest you will get to "lead powder". Of course this is a long shot to find what you need. Quote
Members BIGGUNDOCTOR Posted August 1, 2010 Members Report Posted August 1, 2010 Toss a post on www.iforgeiron.com there are a lot of smiths in the UK that post regularly that may be able to help you out. Quote You laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at you because you are all the same.
Drac Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 golf suppliers carry lead dust and lead strips for weighting under the turkshead. Quote frissenfrassenmussafrussen...
Jaymack Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 (edited) Lead dust scares the heck out of me. Tungsten is a safer alternative and is 1.7 times more dense than lead. You can buy tungston at any hobby shop that sells pinewood derby supplies. Here is one supplier: http://www.pinewoodp...weight-sets.htm This site also has a tungsten putty which I thought was pretty cool. John Edited August 1, 2010 by Jaymack Quote

John the problem with using tungsten for whips is that it's not as soft as lead which can cause the whip to not have a good flex. Quote frissenfrassenmussafrussen...
