Hallo! This is my first posting so I hope i don't do anything wrong. I'm new to tooling and carving and I've seen some works I liked but I just don't know how they did it. I mean something like this:

casecolor_brown02.jpg

How can I do this? Do I have to tool the leather and then dye or color the stampings? I mean stamping the brown leather first and mix dye or paint in a lighter brown and then color the stamped impressions?

I know many of you guys here are very fine and experienced workers so please help me. It would be so great if someone could help me with that problem.

Hello,

You will want to tool first, then color with stain or dye

Bizzy, welcome.

If you scrol down the main page you'll see a topic on dieing.

You do more reading around the site and you'll pick things up.

As for your first pic, it looks like that was done on a mechine ( though in the old days it was done by hand with a couple tools, repeating one impression after another to form the final design). It's an embossing tool that has changeble drums(and roller) with different designes cast or engraved onto each drum. You run a piece of strap leather through the mechine and the drum embosses the design into the leather, then the finish is added later.

The second pic also is likely done from an embosser but could be easily done with two tools, the arched scalloped tool and the pointed arrowhead shaped tool.

Go on the web for leather working tools and you should find some cataloges that show the designs of stamping tools then things should start to make more sense.

Best wishes, GH

I have a way of doing this without a machine. I'll post a photo demo sometime this evening.

the top design seems to me to have been done with an embossing roll that is sold at tandy, that can be used in the handle for the overstitcher item # 8091-00 (omg, did I just do that?! I have to get away from work more often) the rest of the design is done with a large veiner. doesnt seem to bee anything too hard to do.the bottom design is done with a craftool border tool and a craftool veiner, both are also sold at tandy. hope this helps.
