Trying To Make Design A Stitching Pony

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I am trying to design a stitching pony that I can clamp to my workbench that can be easily stored in my tight space, So far this is what I came up with. Its kinda rough but I think you can get the general idea. I want it to have the cam locks and be able to swivel . Also it will have angled legs that I can just drill some holes into that will match holes i will drill into my bench leg to put pins into to be able to adjust the height so i can sit or stand while i'm doing my stiching and stuff. I geuss i'm just trying to find out what a good distance from the clamping leather to the top of the jaws should be (I'm thinking twelve inches), and what cant should the jaws be (75-80 degrees maybe). like I said the jpeg is rough cuz i'm not on my home comp. Any ideas from all of you would be spectacular and greatly appreciated. If I can reinvent the horse so to speak I think I might try to sell these.

Many thanks

Peace and Love

You want a small portable lacing device? How about a Saw Filing Vice. (http://cgi.ebay.com/...=item3cb38a09d6) Here is one on Ebay for 7 bucks. Look around at flea markets and such. Make sure you line the jaws with leather. Good luck.

IDK if this will help - Al Stohlman's book "Tools and how to use them" has a pattern to make a stitching pony yourself - I have the book, just haven't found the time to make one yet...

Good luck!

Here's one I came up with a couple of years ago that might fit your need. I've got a tutorial around here somewhere to build one... it doesn't swivel but it's simple, clamps to a bench, and stores away neatly.

I use one of these on my desk for smaller projects, though I have done large costrels with it. I have been thinking about extending the jaws somehow. Its really good in the it swivels on a ball koint so you can position the work in any axis.

Kate,

If you find that tutorial point the way, please.

Here's the original post I made on this:

Then later I found a better way to mount the clamp, using corner brackets. You can see how that looks here:

If you are really set on making one, by all means, but we bought a bench mount stitching pony from Bob Douglass for my grandfather and they are REALLY nice. The jaws arent really big, but they are really well made and are nice wood as well. They are really affordable as well, I think we paid $75 for his. I plan to order one this year for myself.
