Members Tina Posted January 10, 2008 Author Members Report Posted January 10, 2008 Hi Maeshin and Thanks for looking at my work:-) How long...I've worked with leather now for around +7 years but the tooling/carving is just a few months old. I got my first tools in october last year for that. Padding...I make the padding by sewing 2 layers of soft lamb and 1 layer of...(hmmm here's where sometimes my lack of english reminds it self) the type of material you put into quilts or similar. Leaving a small gap I turn it inside out and stich the opening together. I attache this to the cuff/collar or whatever with rivets. IF I had a sewing machine for the heavy leather I would have used that instead but..."You take what you have and make the best of it" :-) Hope this helps you some//Tina Quote "He who works with his hands is a laborer. You've only been tooling for a few months? That's amazing! You must be a very quick learner ^_^ As to the padding, I think that I know the material you're talking about (though I must confess that I don't know what it's called either). Thanks for the tip ^_^ Quote For all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: It might have been --John Greenleaf Whittier
ArtS Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 I'd love to teach you. The only thing is I'm still learning. I'm only on my second saddle. I hope to learn to braid like that someday. You do beautiful work. Where do you live? ArtS Hi ArtSThat's sooo cute... Well I guess some dog owner might like it? *SSS* I just like to make (hopefully) beautiful things. The handle, well it's on a wood base, braided (most of the times) and with a loads of patience and presistans i get the rings and tacks on. As far as I know I'm the only one making handles like this (and have for about 7 years) They have become one of my trademarks so to speak. I trade you the whole secret for teaching me how to build saddles, one of my dreams to learn:-) Have a Great evening//Tina Quote Art Schwab "You cannot teach a man anything. Members Tina Posted January 11, 2008 Author Members Report Posted January 11, 2008 (edited) Maeshin I think I'm a quick learner when it comes to "hands on"...However I read as much as I can before starting something new. Like the tooling part, I probably started to look at it around a year ago, collecting "theoretical knollage" as much as I can before deciding to give it a go. I just love the Internet, it's full of information, a never ending story:-) ArtSYou have to post up pictures when the second saddle is done.I live in Michigan and I've been i GA a few times...At the airport *SSS* That's one of the big hubs going to Europe/Scandinavia on my way to meet family and friends over there.I give you my best link to braiding. The reason I like this one it's simplified and very easy to follow. All the different types of braiding is at the bottom of the page. http://www.saroftreve.com/wwl/braiding/braiding.shtml Batting...yeah, that's the one, superthanks Jordan:-)I think maybe fleece and such would work too come to think about it. ArtS Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Great site! Thanks. I'll be spending some time there. A coworker asked if I could make him a new strap on his necklace. It has a cross on it and is a simple rout, black braid. I say simple but not for me. I'll have to give it a try. I grew up in Ohio. Glad I'm away from the cold now. It was about 67 today. I don't miss trying to figure out which lump in the snow was my car. My family was from Austria. I was born a year after they came here. I've never been there though. I'd love to see some of their leather work. ArtS MaeshinI think I'm a quick learner when it comes to "hands on"...However I read as much as I can before starting something new. steveb Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 Oki, I put them up again...but because of the forum we're in I take some modified pics of the tooling on certain object to be family friendly;-) beautiful work, i love your flames - really sweet, very dramatic, great color!! it must be tough working with those tiny tools you show in your pics...you've got to get yourself some full size ones, working would be so much easier!! Sweds have i general a habbit of travelling a lot:-) Well, now the snow is gone for the third time but more is on the way...The weather here is almost just the same as in Stockholm where I grew up...Just the summers is muggier here and hotter. I can strongly recommend the Scandinavian summer, around 75, no mugginess and the sun is up between 3am to 10.30pm. and it never really gets dark in June/July. However, we do pay dearly for it in the wiinter, then in some areas is only a few hours of daylight/day. For your friends cross I would suggest a 4 strand round braid in kangaroo. It's way eisier than it looks once you "get it" and quick. Start out with a quarter of an inch leather straps for practice, then you can see how the braid works..."Easy as apple pie" beautiful work, i love your flames - really sweet, very dramatic, great color!!it must be tough working with those tiny tools you showin your pics...you've got to get yourself some full size ones, working would be so much easier!! Hi steve and Thanks, glad you like'm. Naw...I think I use the same tools as the rest of you? :-) I just wish I could find some of them in smaller versions...I fiddle a lot *S* Have a great evening Edited January 11, 2008 by Tina Quote "He who works with his hands is a laborer.
