Sheath Help

I probably should of posted this in the Holster and Sheath section. I guess there is no way to switch it over oooopps.

Ok I have a customer who has given me a knife to make a sheath for. To me it looks like a stake knife but its actually a military issued knife for cutting parachute line in an emergency.

Here is my question.

Where the blade meets the handle there is a nice little curve so your finger can sit there while cutting. What do you think would work best for the welt? I wasn't sure if i followed the natural curve of the knife the blade won't fit in the sheath. Should I end the welt before the curve?

If it was for me, . . . I'd make the top edge of the opening of the sheath conform to the angle of the handle.

1) I think it would look better

2) Because of the angle, . . . it would naturally lay against the top of the knife blade, . . . keeping the sharp edge from the welt and stitching.

THAT could become an esthetically pleasing project, . . . not all do.

Darren ,cut that bump in your welt out and just run it straight upon the edge line.Also make sure your welt is the same or a little less thickness than the blade, so it won't flop around as it aids in retention .Dave

I am just going to go off my abilities at this moment and say the angles of the knife will be to complicated to make a tight fit without any sort of strap to keep the knife in place. There will be some wiggle room but not to much where it will fall out... i don't think. I guess the best bet is to mock it up with real leather and give it a go.

I had a bad link on that last post, here's a picture of the sheath.

What I had redone last night looks similar to that sheath. Customer didn't want it to go back that far, he wants a good chunk of the handle left out. I might do some moulding for it, but I might be doing an inlay too. I might make one of each because he might like one version than the other and these knives are every where so someone else might just pick up the other version.

Just as an update.

I totally screwed the pooch on the stitching. It was super thick and the awl didn't go through evenly

So I launched it in a fit of rage across the house lol

So after I move this weekend where I will be able to set up my own private little shop, I will give it a go again. Thankfully I was doing this as a learning project for free, my buddy who I was doing it for is really understanding and is leaving the knife with me so I can practise more.
