Anyone got a good supplier for veg tanned leather, in fact any leather, in SA, Botswana, Namibia or Zimbabwe, cow or Kudu.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

I read in another place that Tandy has opened a store in Capetown. Not sure if it's a regular Tandy store or just a dealer. You might try sending a PM to Anet du Toit here on the forum. She's from South Africa and would be able to tell you where she gets her leather from.

Thanks ClayB i will give her a shout and maybe she has some good ideas.

Would prefer to get a shop nearby (Cape Town is about a 1000 miles from where I live in SA) as I prefer to select my leather, rather than rely on what you get from mail order.

I did this on a blue wildebeest hide I had tanned at Kwiktan in Krugersdorp. You can also look up a Petrie Marais from Pretoria - an active leatherworker.

Hi All,

At last the South Africans are showing their profiles - now we can start sharing!

I am from Paarl and the company in Cape Town is Woodheads - they have started stocking Tandy merchandise.

They are also hide merchants and have literally got hides for "Africa". Their quality is good and graded so you know what you are buying.

I take my deer skins (Springbuck, Kudu, Oryx and Eland) to Game skin Safari ( Cape Town to have it veg tanned. They do a great job and it's not to expensive, because I supply my own hides. You can also buy from them direct.

They do hair on tanning as well.

The guys in Krugersdorp are also good and have done some soft tanning of Springbuck hides for me, but they got the colour on the hides wrong and it could not be changed....That's the problem when you are not close enough to check dye colours.

Regards

Dirk
