When using Fiebings Oil dye, should I oil the leather before applying the dye, or not ?

I´d like to know the proper way to use it !

Knut,

I use it on dry leather. Not sure it would work on oiled leather since that oil would already be present in the fiber and there would be no place for the oil dye to penetrate to. Of course the opposite might also be true in that the oil present would actually wick the dye into the fiber better, but then how do you control where it goes? Interesting question, I might have to do some test patches which is what I would recommend you do.

Don't oil it first. Deglaze or use some other type of cleaner then apply your dye.

I'm just the opposite. I oil before using the dye. This will open up the pores of the leather and create a more even dye job.

Never argue with a stupid person. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!

One of the beauties of leather working is that you find out what works best for you. Experimentation is the key. Buy a bag of scrap vegi-tan and start experimenting.

For me I dye first then rub in oil.

Good morning from the grumpy old man; I cut my leather out, dye it, allow to dry thoroughly, assemble, oil, allow to penetrate, finish. Mike

NOTE TO SELF: Never try to hold a cat and an operating Dust buster at the same time!!

At my age I find that I can live without sex..........but not without my glasses.

Being old has an advantage.......nobody expects me to do anything in a hurry.

Thank you guys, for all your inputs. I´ll try both the dry and the oil method and see what´s best for me.
