This pic shows the outline of the figure beveled - I kept the back of the leather damp as well so that the beveling will be very clear on the back side - that is the guide I have to show where the plugs should be glued down. You can see how I have already put a bit of extra water on the figure in preparation for stretching the leather. For the stretching you can see in the second pic, I use a half inch diameter ball bearing under the leather and I roll the leather over this ball so that it stays all on the edge of the design. Leerwerker Report post Posted May 25, 2008 (edited) I see the pics are not in the same sequence as what I posted them.Here you can see the underside of the leather after rolling and stretching the edge of the design. You can also see the green line I marked the beveling line with so that I have a clear line to follow when gluing down the plug on this side of the leather. Here the plugs are being glued on the back. I do not do detailed gluing - I just put some contact adhesive down on the leather and then put the plugs down on that - it just has to hold the plugs in place. Leerwerker Report post Posted May 25, 2008 With the plugs glued in, I am now working on the beveling again. I first bevel all around the edge again so that the leather get stretched around the plugs. Then I use pear shaders to "find" all the furrows in the plugs and sculpt the figure over the plugs. This will be more than one session of working ... but it is starting to give rewarding results! I'm very glad to be able to see such an elaborate work of art take form and that you are taking time to show pics and explain all steps to us. ClayB Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Johan, This is really neat to watch. I can now see the advantage to using the plugs for embossing over just using putty in a project like this. The definition you are getting over the plugs on the smooth skin is really amazing. Making the plugs has to take up a lot more time than just filling with putty, but it is going to make such a big difference in this project. I am with all the rest of the people here, I can't wait to see the next step. Thanks so much for taking the time to do the pictures and share them with us. It was really nice to meet you in Sheridan.
