Ferg Report post Posted June 13, 2011 Nice pipes Stewart. We have Hackberry trees on our property in Ohio. When you cut with a chain saw the chips are almost white. Other than that it is a less than pretty tree with rough bark and Elm Like leaves. ferg It was sold to me as Hackberry wood at a Wood Working Expo

I thought about using that wood again on another pipe except I figure That it 's not going to be the same as the first.. I had no other problems using other woods over again. But this ,I and my wife like it so much that its the only one I will make from that type of wood. Again thanks Joe and Lois Stewart . Ferg Report post Posted June 13, 2011 Joe, If you want some more of the wood let me know. I may be able to find a chunk in the wood pile, if so it would have been air drying for two years, under cover. Just let me know ferg Thank you Ferg I never done this before and it seems to be working for me. Corvus Report post Posted June 14, 2011 I've never heard of Hack Berry but those markings in the wood look like spalting which is discolouration caused by a fungal infection in the wood. It doesn't weaken the wood but gives these beautiful markings so is quite sort after. I have a beautiful small set of drawers made from spalted Beech. I shall be interested to see this pipe when it is finished.

I also never thought about looking up images of woods to see what they look ike when its a finished project. Now i will to see what the characteristics are before I buy. Login Dog Report post Posted July 5, 2011 That is one right fine pipe and your brother-in-law will be proud to have it. I know I surely would. How did you shape it? Are you going to line the chamber with anything or burn it?

Are you going to line the chamber with anything or burn it? Not going to line it. Just smoke it. Let the tobacco build up a cake inside. Stewart Report post Posted July 7, 2011 That is one right fine pipe and your brother-in-law will be proud to have it. I know I surely would. How did you shape it? Are you going to line the chamber with anything or burn it? Forgot about how I shaped it. used a dermal with flex shaft -spiral wood cutting dill bit- wide tooth cutter. Drill press for bowel hole. Hand drilled air passage on stem. Bench wood saw, 1inch x 30inch belt sander and a 4inch band sander. did between 3pm and 5pm on bench while enjoying the afternoon. I can not measure worth a filp, so I just eye ball it. Joe
Login Dog Report post Posted July 8, 2011 I might have to give that a try. I would need to get some different wood than what I have right now. All I have is pine. You have piqued my interest. Thanks Stewart.
