happyhide Report post Posted August 3, 2011 Hello everybody, New member here. Im a cabinetmaker who wants to try his hands at leatherwork. Since im also a watch lover, I thought I would start with strapmaking and made a couple of them. As the topic says, i have a lot of difficulty with the edges. By that I mean that i cant seem to make the edge hold or at least durable because a watchstrap is by nature flexed or twisted a lot. I have tried Mr. Hidepounder technique without success. Maybe there's something that i dont understand or not doing correctly, maybe im asking to much and that perhaps it is normal that the paint or stain wears off after a few days. I use stain, no paint for my edges and never have any peal, flake, or rub off. Use the products Bob suggests and follow the instructions to the letter. ferg Hello everybody, New member here. 28ist Report post Posted August 4, 2011 I am also new to leather working. The one thing I've noticed is that the quality of leather does make a difference (at least to a hobbyist like me). The first few things I tried to finish were with "economy" leather and the edges come out horrible; I just couldn't get the fibers to bind together well enough to get a nice edge. Now that I am using better leather with a very tight grain (fibers) my edge finishing has improved tremendously. I've used Hide Pounder's instructions with great success.
