I think you're already there my friend. You're putting knots around a shape I have not tried yet. I don't exactly have a way to get some horns like that. LOL...

Thanks again, Brian. The antlers wee sent to me by a silversmith in Texas I do a little braiding for. As far as braiding around them, I braided the knots on a mandrel and then slid it onto the antlers and tightened it. Makes life much easier. Especially when you use the pins in the mandrel. I had to rebraid the long buttons enough times I finally "got it" and they make sense to me.

Joe

Nice work and a great way to keep the antlers together!

That's a fancy set of noise makers. Nice work. The owner should be happy with those.

Thanks All,

After teh learning curve on teh long button, they were actually fun to do. I need to do more braiding like this. After so many attempts, I finally "got it" and the process of braiding the buttons is sinking in.

Thanks, everyone. I talked to the guy that sent them to me and he was very pleased with them. I told him I would be happy to do this to all the antlers he could send me. I think I will get a set and make for him to display in his store. Anyone know where I can buy shed antlers?

Moscow Hide and Fur, Etsy sellers, Chichester Inc., and check with any nearby taxidermists/game meat processors.

Also, I don't know what the laws are in your state, but in mine, If I wish to buy whole or mostly whole antler, they must be a shed (button is intact). If the antler is attached to any skull portion or been sawn off, it has to have an interstate game tag (runs about $8 in most states, I think). Once made into an object (mount, decoration, furniture, carvings, etc.) the interstate tag no longer has to be attached, but should be kept by the buyer (me), along with sales receipts from both the seller of the raw antler and the end buyer, in case a question ever arises as to where the antler came from.

No question about it, I prefer to buy sheds with intact buttons, or antler pieces (which do not require game tags, just a receipt).
