Steff Report post Posted September 20, 2011 I have been working with leather on and off for about 35 years now, mostly belts, holsters wallets and motorcycle stuff. Just joined a bowling league and can't stand the thought of buying a bowling ball bag that is just like everyone else's, Does anyone have a pattern for a classic bag maybe something from the '50s or '60s? I have "The art of making cases but think the one in there is kind of lame. Thanks.
WyomingSlick Report post Posted September 20, 2011 It is not clear what you are looking for here? a construction pattern, or a tooling pattern, or both??? When you mentioned "classic" that brought to mind all the bowling bags that I have seen in thrift stores - you know... Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc..... How about finding one there you like, and with your years of experiance, and a little help from Al S., you should be able to reverse engineer a satisfactory bag. BIGGUNDOCTOR Report post Posted September 20, 2011 It would take some digging, but I may have the patterns from that bag Mom made around 1952. It was a Tandy kit, but it is not like the current one.
Tinneal Report post Posted September 21, 2011 Besides the AS book, I'm not sure... Can you just do an image search for bowling ball bags and see what you find? Or modify the existing one, or another case pattern? The AS one would definitely be unlike anyone else's!
Steff Report post Posted September 21, 2011 I'm looking for both construction and tooling patterns. I love the vintage tandy stuff so an old kit pattern would probably be cool. I have thought about finding a cheap used bag that I could use to reverse engineer my own pattern. While I can carve and tool quite nicely my weakpoint is creating a tooling pattern to fit a construction pattern of my own. I'm just not quite that artisticlly creative. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Blackey Cole Report post Posted September 25, 2011 Get Al Stolman's three books on building cases one has everything you are asking for. Pattern, tooling, and by chance it has that 50's/60s look to it.

I have the Tandy Bowling Bag Kit (Stock No. 4429) that has the instructions, pattern and photocarve pattern. It is way too big to copy, since it is full sized. I could lend it to you. On a side note, this was my very first leather project I ever made (circa 1988). I made two other bags, but did not have the plastic ball holder or brass feet from the kit, so I just cut some lumber and made a box frame and used some bolts with fancy brass nuts that were domed to hold the wood and when through the leather to be the feet. I could draw a picture, if you would like. These pictures are using the Tandy ball holder and the Tandy feet. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org
Tinneal Report post Posted September 25, 2011 That's a neat looking bag! I'd love to get a copy of the pattern, although I'm not sure when I'd ever be asking to make one... BIGGUNDOCTOR Report post Posted September 26, 2011 The one my Mom made back in the 50's is similar but instead of the rounded edge buck stitching it has a laced edge which forms ridges along the top. The bottom is also one piece that wraps halfway up the sides.
Steff Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Thanks PLAC for a first project it looks like you did a fine job! Does the bag hold a ball and a pair of shoes? If it does I would be interested in the pattern. The carving pattern is the western folral style that I like. Steff

The bag holds the ball in the bottom, the shoes lay on top of the ball. That is why the top of the bag is so wide. So I guess you are interested in the pattern. Where do I send it? stelmackr Report post Posted September 26, 2011 Bob, Kinkos (or similar) can scan or print it. Aaron Aaron, I really don't want to go to the trouble and cost to do it. I kind of figure the person that wants it can go to Kinkos (or similar) to scan and print it. Just my thoughts. Bob Stelmack www.pslac.org
