Ferg Report post Posted January 2, 2012 I grew up on a farm, my oldest brother farmed all his life as did most of my family elders. Before I left for the service in 1952 we had draft horses, Percheron. Two jet black, two mares that were sorrel, and a Dappled grey stud, his name was Nick Settlemyer. Animals of all sizes and shapes have always been part of my life. I love them all but there is simply no more beautiful animal than a horse. Wife, daughter and I seen the movie "War Horse" this evening. The movie simply reinforced the love I have for them. If any of you have not seen this film, go, take plenty of tissues. Happy New Year everyone! ferg

Ferg Report post Posted January 8, 2012 Thanks for that. I am reminded of a time my men and I were building stalls in a barn for show horses. A particular mare kept wanting to bite me every time I passed in front of her. After a few times of that I noticed she had a nose covered with "bumps". I remarked to the owner that the horse had a virus. He was amazed that I would have noticed or even known that. He applied some medication and before we finished the job a few days later, she didn't try to bite me anymore. Anyone around horses knows they can laugh at you, as other animals do also. That mare was laughing or smiling, I am not sure, but she sure was happy. Have a great day! ferg ferg i didn't craft these words but how appropriate are they! look back on our struggle for freedom.trace our present days strength to its source.you'll find that mans pathway to glory, is strewn with the bones of the horse "lest we forget"

You have quoted part of one of my favorites. The only place I have seen that particular poem in print is a 1920 book called "Songs of Horses". He lists the author as anonymous. Any idea who might have written it? Randy Rieman does a good job reciting it, but he got it from the same book I did. A couple years ago he still didn't know who wrote it either. bruce johnson Report post Posted January 9, 2012 Peter John, "There was movement at the station, for the word had got around, that the colt from old Regret had got away...". I pretty well had it commited to memory a few years ago. Other ones of his I like are "Clancey of the Overflow" and "The Geebung Polo Club". I also like Will Ogilvie's "Hooves of the Horses".Somebody will be reading that at my funeral someday. I read a lot of Robert Service too. My favorite modern poet is Joel Nelson. "Breaker in the Pen" is a good one. I think "The Men Who Ride No More" is pretty powerful. Hard to pick favorites on his CD though, I think they are all good ones. Cheers, Bruce P.S. Randy Cornelius Report post Posted January 11, 2012 When I was still in school, I was riding horses with my dad who was a cowboy in his own right. I loved to ride and basicly grew up on the back of a horse. I cannot ever remember not having all kinds of horses around as my dad was a breeder and a trainer. So I asked him one day, Do you recon there are horses in heaven? My dad said he did not know for sure but if there were'nt he didn't want to go there. I feel the same way. Horses are my theripest. They will listen to me when no one else will... Good topic. Randy

Leather Girl Report post Posted April 17, 2012 I love animals, all animals and my two very favorites are horses and cats . I love horse the smell of them, their velvet noses and lips and I love kissing them. From the time I was very young I loved horses and I was the only one in my family who was horse crazy. When I bought my horse and had subsequent babies they were a huge joy in my life. I ended up showing them and training horses along with dogs and cats(showing). Horses are amazing they carry their weight and you and equipment too. I had taught my horses to kiss and people who say they can't see in colour are nuts. Every time I had or came up in a different car they would not come to me until I walked up to them. One time another boarder and I had the same car different colours but they came to my car and not hers. Once a year my horse would throw me, she knew when I was not paying attention. She would then stand and laugh at me but I loved them so and everyday I miss them and think of them. It has been 25 years since they have been gone. If you love horses you will always love them. They are a noble and beautiful animal who will always have a piece of my heart. I have not seen war horse and that is because I know I will cry all the way through the movie. Ferg Report post Posted April 17, 2012 Randi-Lee, I have a grand daughter in Agriculture College now. She has loved horse since she was a little girl. Her dad says she will need to stick with their Boer Goats until on her own. LOL I have many great memories of growing up with draft horses. You love them, take care of them, they will work without any argument and Love you ten times over. Our big black Percheron colt use to tease me all the time. I was short, only about 12 or 13 years old, he was a good 15 hands. Every time I tried putting a halter on him he stood on my foot, just enough to keep me down. ferg I love animals, all animals and my two very favorites are horses and cats . dbusarow Report post Posted April 17, 2012 Re Heaven Revelations 19:11 Then I saw heaven opened and here came a white horse! The one riding it was called "Faithful" and "True," and with justice he judges and goes to war. Yes, there are horses in heaven. Good thing too or my wife would switch sides Dan
Leather Girl Report post Posted April 18, 2012 Dan, I would switch sides too. You have some gorgeous horses, maybe I will come your way this summer and relieve you of a few. You would never miss them. When I was little there would be horses in a field and I would tell my mother that I had to take them home because they were all alone and no one owned them.
