Embossed Lines On Straps

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I do some degree of casual work (i.e. occasional holster, pouch, whatever) but I have a project which I need some advice on. The item I'm making/copying has a strap with a set of parallel lines along each edge that appears to have been applied with some sort of embossing wheel. Mind you, they're just like a pinstripe, not a design like barbed wire or chains or anything like that.

What kind of tool or technique do I need to duplicate this effect? I've given thought to rigging a washer into my overstitch wheel but since there's no guide I would have a hard time keeping the line perfectly parallel to the edge of the leather. I'm sure there has to be a specialized tool for this. Thanks,

Jon

If you mind buying embosing machine for some hundred bucks.... ;)

Then you could get over it with exactly stuff you have mentioned.

I just usually use ruler like that, just made it myself putting sort of cork strip about 3 mm thick on the back of simple stainless steel ruler from the toolshop. If your strap too narrow to put ruler onto, then you can put a piece of leather of teh same thickness next to strap side by side and give ruler partially lie on that leather piece. Works for me.

BTW For something more interesting than just pin strip you can go for something like these.

If all you want is a line on the edge of a strap, . . . buy a cheap pair of dividers, . . . dull one point somewhat, . . . set the distance you want, . . . moisten the strap, . . . drag the dulled poing down the edge of the strap, . . . let it dry.

Uhhh, . . . I think my dividers were about $8, . . .

May God bless,

Dwight
