Leather Dropping Through The Plate

I'm having a problem with my leather projects falling down into the hole on the plate.

Is the only solution leaving a wider lip on the project then trimming it off after?

In such cases, I remove the feed dog and replace the standard plate with the narrow slotted plate. Since reverse depends on the feed dog, use the poor man's reverse when using a slotted plate and no feeder.

Bob is making a slotted plate for my Seiko. He may have one in stock for your 4500.

I have one for my Consew flat bed. Have used it a lot especially for soft/and or thin leather.

I have these two plates marked stirrup and holster but I don't know how they work with stirrups or holsters.

They both have a raised surface where the needle slot is, I might be able to use the stirrup plate or is there something better?

I would try the stirrup plate on some scrap. I think it will work. The plate Bob is making for me won't have the rise in it. You realize with the stirrup plate you lose some of your leather thickness ability.

I do, now that you mention it Ferg.

Just looked at it and I think it will work with the cases I'm producing and I don't think I'll have to remove the feed dog.

I'll have to get a flat plate for it if I can.

Can I leave the feed dog in place and just use the stirrup plate?

I am assuming the pressure foot tension must be reduced as well?

I got one with my CB4500. Call Bob and order the flat, slotted throat plate. You need to unscrew the feeder to install that plate. Note the height of the raised dog in the standard plate and return it to that position when you reinstall it and the standard plate.

Hi Guys. When using the slotted plate for top-stitching, or for finer leathers, remove the feed dog and then add some stitch length to compensate for no feed dog. For top-stitching, use the standard left toe presser foot, you can also use the double toe presser foot for sewing lighter weight leathers but the double toe presser foot will not allow you to get close to the edge for top-stitching. Your right the more you use it the more you'll understand when a different plate or foot is needed.

As we all know most answers can be found here either by searching or asking, when all else fails call me .If you just want to call & have me call you back it's ok with me as I have some good phone rates to Canada now.
