How To Prevent Streaking In Resolene?

Recommended Posts

I'm having a problem with applying a resolene finish to some of my pieces. I keep getting streaks in the finish regardless of how I apply it - dauber, towel, etc. I don't have a spray gun so that not an option.

Do any of you use this product? How do you apply it and prevent streaking?

Also, is it possible to buff out the streaks? How would you do that? I'd hate to scrap what would otherwise be a nice piece.

When I use resolene, I always cut it 50/50 with water. I apply it with a damp 1" sponge paint brush. Doing something large like a journal cover, I usually get a little streaking, but it usually goes away when I apply a second coat. Your strokes look a bit like you kept working it too long after the sealer was already starting to dry. Before you try buffing it out, you might try applying a second coat, but be sure to keep a wet edge, and not go back over your work if at all possible.

I have always had good luck with Resolene, . . . but as particle said, . . . first thing is you have to cut it with water, . . . and do a full 50/50.

I use a cheap, 1 inch, bristle hair brush, . . . about 50 cents at Harbor Frieight, . . . and I put enough product on to work up what looks like a light lather, . . . sorta like soap bubbles. Once I get my good lather, . . . I just keep brushing, . . . left, right up, down, cross ways, . . . until the bubbles brush out.

It produces more of a satin finish my way, . . . but it is a pretty finish, . . . and a durable finish, . . . and if I am not in a hurry, . . . there are not streaks.

May God bless,

Dwight

Thanks [Dwight] and [Particle] for the suggestions. I wasn't cutting it at all. I'll try the 50/50 solution and a second coat.
