alan83ogz Report post Posted December 20, 2012 (edited) Hey hi Guys! I'm planning to make my own tablet leather cases eg. for ipad mini etc. However, I'm not sure what is the so-called plastic material used normally on the front of the case. The leather associated with this kind of project usually involves PU leather or others. Can someone provide me with some advice on this project? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading & Merry Christmas everyone! Edited December 20, 2012 by alan83ogz
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted December 20, 2012 What kind of case are you going for? Sleeve or notebook style? The easiest style would be a sleeve. In that case, i wouldn't even worry about any plastics. Just use some heavy weight (8 - 9 oz) and line it with some felt material for protection. alan83ogz Report post Posted December 21, 2012 hi Cyberthrasher, thanks so much for attending to my question. erm I am into the notebook style where it's quite commonly sold in the eBay and Amazon. i definitely have to use the pu leather with the plastic material. could you or anyone guide me into this? Thanks in advance!
TwinOaks Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Could you post a link? The only plastic I can think of for this is acetate.....but I don't think the capacitive screen would work through it.
alan83ogz Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Hi TwinOaks, Thanks for contributing! Yeah the below link is an example of what I hope to accomplish. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnetic-iPad-1-1st-Generation-Leather-Case-Cover-with-Build-in-Stand-8-Color-LL-/251077182080?pt=US_Tablet_eReader_Cases_Covers_Keyboard_Folios&hash=item3a755dc280 If you notice, the front cover flap has the capability of being folded into an 'A' shape to act as a stand for the ipad. It has a 3 portions of plastic beneath the pu leather. Yeah I think one portion is magnetic to work with the capacitive screen for the wake or sleep function. Are acetate close to that? Thanks. Randy Cornelius Report post Posted December 21, 2012 If you are wanting something like vinal plastic sheets you can get that at most sewing material shops. It is what I use for the clear window in wallets insides. You can get it in several weights and thickness. comes my the yard or foot off a 48" roll. Northmount Report post Posted December 21, 2012 For the leather cover / folded stand, could use kidex for a stiffener. Would keep the weight and bulk down. The magnet doesn't do anything with the capacitive screen. Different technologies. It activates a tiny magnetic reed switch near the edge of the tablet. You can test for the location of the switch by using a small magnet. Tom
Itch Report post Posted December 21, 2012 Look at sheets of ABS plastic..Can be used as a stiffener.
