Sewing Machine For Leather Jackets?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm just getting into men's leather jackets, and wanted to get some advice on which machine to buy.

After reading through the threads, two machines stuck out:

  • Techsew 2700
  • Juki 1541S

As you guys know, both are compound walking foot machines. But, one has a cylindrical head; the other doesn't. Not entirely sure if the cyclindrical head would be ideal. But, I've read in some previous posts that cyclindrical heads were more versatile. With that said, though, the important things I'm looking for is a machine that doesn't mark the leather and that's accurate enough for one to sew rows of evenly-spaced topstitches.

Down the road, I may get into thicker weight leather for motorcycle apparel, if that helps to know.

Also, considering jackets use lighter weight leathers, do you think a regular, non-walking foot machine could be used? I currently use a Juki 8700 (non-walking foot).

Any opinions?

Thanks so much!!! :)

It is called a "cylinder arm" machine. You also have the option of a used Singer 111W155 or a Singer 153W101, same basic machine, 111 is flatbed 153 is cylinder arm, they don't have reverse. Cobra and Cowboy also "make" this style machine.

And you can attach a flat bed adapter to a cylinder arm machine. Depending on what parts you are sewing, sometimes the flat bed makes that part of the job easier.

I prefer a flatbed walking foot machine to sew vests and jackets. However, the arm holes and cuffs are easier to sew on a cylinder arm machine. You'll be better off if you can afford both a flat bead and a cylinder arm walking foot machine. But, if you can only afford one, go with the 2700, with the optional table attachment.

Do not even attempt to sew leather jackets on a non-walking foot machine. A million little old lady zombies, with hairy legs, all wearing babushkas, will haunt you until you perish from wrong machine frustrations.
