Singer 99K

Is the singer 99 k a good buy for a beginner wanting to make lightweight wallets , purses and such - I actually enjoy sewing heavy weight leather by hand " I find it relaxing "

What kind of thickness or weight of leather would it cope with - 3 layers of 2 oz ? and are they easy to maintain.

A 15 class Singer will work much better than a 99.

I agree with Bob. I have had pretty good results with the 66, and a 201-2 is really good also. They are are home/family machines and are limited. In my opinion if you can sew with 46 thread or smaller you will do OK with these machines. Singer 31-15 would make you a nice machine.

I have a 99k that I have used a little for wallet linings and pockets. I have stitched 1 layer of 3 to 4 oz veg tan to pigskin lining sometimes you have to help it get started but it runs okay. I think that would pretty much be the limit on it. I was given the machine. If you are going to buy a sewing machine I would listen to the earlier posts.

Thanks for the replies everyone - the 31 - 15 seems to be quite rare over here in the UK but the rest of the models you have mentioned are readily available, I will be

asking a service agent about purchasing a machine one day next week.

I got a singer 99K to,

cannot get the bottom tensions right on it at all.

Personally I'd go with a small cylinder arm machine, I think the work is more manouverable on those & if ya clever enough you could always build a box to go around the arm to make a flatbed, just my opinion, if I get another machine thats what I'll be after.
