Members Anne Bonnys Locker Posted June 5, 2013 Members Report Posted June 5, 2013 One thing to be ware of is that oil pump machines are not ideal if used on a continual basis at low speed. OTOH when running at low speed with a servo motor there is much lower load on the bearings. It is one of the many considerations in selecting a machine. Quote Darren Brosowski
Members gottaknow Posted June 5, 2013 Members Report Posted June 5, 2013 All you have to do on the 281-22's is wind the occasional bobbin at high speed. The bearings in these machines are near bulletproof. Singer overbuilt most of this generation. They will outlive most of us. Regards, Eric Quote
Members Anne Bonnys Locker Posted June 5, 2013 Members Report Posted June 5, 2013 There is a formula for determining bearing life and it essentially relates to load and speed. If the bearings are of high quality then it is unlikely they will wear quickly. Mostly Igive this warning on Chinese machines. Members gottaknow Posted June 5, 2013 Members Report Posted June 5, 2013 I agree Darren. The Chinese have yet to figure out how to make durable bearings. That and the races that contain them. Nice to see you here again btw. Regards, Eric Quote

Members Leila Posted November 13, 2013 Author Members Report Posted November 13, 2013 Hello again, Well I have been sewing away on my singer 281, it is a good machine, but I now need to sew thicker leather and want to invest in a walking foot, but have no idea where to start. My singer skips stitches and shreds the thread when I try and go through any more than 3 layers of the medium weight cow hide that I have been using, and I need to be able to sew through up to 5 preferably. I also need it to handle a thicker harder strap leather but without eating up the softer stuff. If I could get pointed in the right direction I would be most appreciative. Thank You, Leila Quote
CowboyBob Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 You might try adjusting the pressure foot to give it more pressure so it can hold the thicker material down. This is the large screw on the top leftside.
