But still want to learn serious skills. What beveler would I need, have cheap craft tool stuff and done me fairly well over the years....what makes the difference between a 40 dollar beveler and a 5 dollar one....can I polish them to make em better, what do I need to look for when I get some good ones...what kind would I need...hhmmm....lots of questions, I am open for all info and answers. Thanks for any help.. Ohhh and I admire these beautiful Sheridan carvings so much....If I just could do one of them with flames....hahhaa... James Quote

Members Cyberthrasher Posted March 30, 2013 Members Report Posted March 30, 2013 Start with some Sheridan bevelers. The steep pitch on them will allow you get a lot closer detail and less of that unsightly halo. I'd say get yourself a set of Barry King smooth bevelers, perhaps 00 and 1 for sizes. That should run you about $50 for the 2 of them. It's hard for me to explain the differences. The lines are crisper, they walk smoother, just all around better attention to how the tool was meant to perform. Quote
Members buzzardbait Posted March 30, 2013 Members Report Posted March 30, 2013 I recently bought 7 new bevelers from Barry King, they are precise and effortless to use. Money well spent. Quote
Chief31794 Posted March 31, 2013 Report Posted March 31, 2013 Have to agree with Barry King Bevelers, I have a set of smooth and checkered and wouldn't bevel with anything else. As Cyberthrasher said, hard to explain the difference, but it's there. Chief Quote

There was something rattling around in the back of my mind ... finally realized what it was. Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire. Now you really have to do it! Tom Quote
Members Treed Posted April 1, 2013 Members Report Posted April 1, 2013 The Sheridan bevelers are great for Sheridan tooling. If you want to do picture carving then you are going to need bevelers that are made for that type to tooling. Smooth, checkered, lined in different sizes.... each one has a job to do in the carving. I would suggest going to Tandy's web site and for 10.00 you can get unlimited viewing of the training videos. Great information for everyone.... easier than trying to explain Quote
