How Do Make A Slouch/bush Hat?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how to make a slouch/bush hat. Has anyone made one? Is there a pattern for it out there? I have the Tandy hat pattern pack and was wondering if the mavrick style hat could be altered to make one? Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you. John

groovytech. Thank you for the reoky and info. At the moment I can't afford the 35.00 pattern and vid but maybe before long. I was really wondering if someone had made the Tandy Mavrick style hat and if it could be altered to not look like a cowboy hat so much. Anyone???? John

Here is a video with a pattern near the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTJCi63O6Uw

There is also some good hat making info in this thread http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=40162&pid=249679&st=0entry249679

Northmount. Thank you for the reply and information. I did watch that video. I am not to good at making patterns. If I were to say use the proper size from say the Tandy Maverick pattern. Could I use the crown and top setup from the video to alter the Maverick pattern? Well I think the brim size might be differant to but I think I can use a compass to alter that. Does that sound possable? John

I was watching the video Nothmount put up again and noticed something about the pattern. The brim size would be 4 inches in the front and back but the sides would only be 2 3/4 on each side? Is that normal for a hat to have a smaller brim on the sides then the front and back? John

Never mind I looked at the measurement again and seen it was 8 1/2 when I thought it said 6 1/2. For the inside demention front to back. John

I'd use the pattern from bushcraft just above your last post. It looks better and gets rid of the seam down the front.

I just took a look at the corrected pattern near the end of the video. The brim is the same width all around. See the frame grabbed here post-16698-0-68523200-1367183755_thumb.j

Well I am not good at making my own patterns and the one video is in cm. So I think what I am going to do is use the Tandy mavrick pattern;s brim and use the altered crown and top from the bush hat. That one is my size anyway. So the two should go together. I guess no one here has ever made the Mavrick hat before. I figured someone would show a picture of one they made. Oh well. Thanks anyway. I made a very simple bush hat using the following steps.

1. Measure your head and on a large cardbord cut a cirlce the size of your head.

2. Cut a second circle 3.5 to 4 inches arround your first circle.

3. Cut a 4 inch wide strip 2 inches longer than your head size.

4. Sew together -- I didn't skive the sides and it worked well for me.

I sewed the crown part inside out like the video above and then sew to the brim. The last thing I sew is the strip ends in the back of the hat. With it being 2" larger than your head size just cut it to make it fit.

5. Dye hat to desired color

6. Finish using a good water sealant.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the reply Madadh. For the brim I was going to use the brim from the Tandy Maverick style hat. The pattern was free over on the patterns and templates section. It has premarked sizes in it. An then I will go from there. John
