Burnishing Edges

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am finishing edges using the excellent directions provided by Hidepounder. My issue is that I am getting a magenta like discoloration of the leather near the edges. In Hidepounder's step 3, I either use just water or beeswax. In step 4, I use the Fiebings yellow paste saddle soap and apply it using denim. I am finishing my edges before I finish the rest of the leather. Why do you think I am getting this discoloration? I am no pro but my 2 cents would be to ask if this is a photo after the water is dried or not? If it is dry in this photo it looks to me like it is just hitting more than the edge when you apply the beeswax or paste. I don't know. That's what my edges look like when it is still wet, but goes away when it has dried.

This is dry (2 days). When I apply the paste with the denim, I do get some paste on the leather not just the edges. It's hard not to. Actually I don't see how I am not going to. Any suggestions?

Change your applicator.

I use the foam brushes to apply dye and wool daubers to apply gum trag along the edges, the wax goes on the burnishing wheel.

Just be careful you don't put too much on your applicator.

I also sometimes use the daubers or a sponge cut up into little squares. The little squares make it easier to handle with less of a chance to go off the edge.

I don't have experience with the paste form of saddle soap, but I do use Fiebing's liquid saddle soap (the one that comes in a spray bottle)...

I usually just spray a folded up paper towel with the soap and wipe it on the edges...it's very easy to control where the soap goes this way. You can also spray the soap onto a Q tip and wipe it on with that if you want a lot of control of where t goes...just my two cents but I hope it works for you =)

try this wet edges with a piece 2x fake sheepskin,run finger surface down edge n find nap direction.turn s/kin over use coarse cloth side n slide down edge in th lay down nap direction.make sure edge is wet,you can slick down edge this way. now rub soap bar along edge in same direction,good layer,then wood burnish or blue jean rag it to your satisfacyion.keep soap bar from overlapping up off edge,that tends to effect colour a bit n effects dye too.
