Members Haystacker Posted May 16, 2013 Members Report Posted May 16, 2013 I tried dyeing with Hibiscus Tea. This is not as pink as my original test piece. I have brewed more tea to make the batch stronger. My goal was to make a "girlie" looking holster. I think the holster has the girlie look with an added intimidating factor. Quote
Members Steve75 Posted May 16, 2013 Members Report Posted May 16, 2013 I like the contrast in colors. This is the first time I have heard of using tea to dye leather. Quote
Members Haystacker Posted May 16, 2013 Author Members Report Posted May 16, 2013 Steve, I have used coffee too. Works great. Makes a light tan color. Quote

I have used oxblood, mostly use it with black to make a black cherry that can really turn out beautiful. May God bless, Dwight Quote
Members Haystacker Posted May 16, 2013 Author Members Report Posted May 16, 2013 jlaudio - Those look good. I really think you have the right color. I have been drinking the Hibiscus tea for my health. I gave it a try after seeing what it looked like in my cup. My test piece of leather was light weight and dyed more pink. I have strengthened my batch and will try another holster next week. Quote
Members Steve75 Posted May 17, 2013 Members Report Posted May 17, 2013 I currently use olive oil as a means of dying leather. I light coat of olive and some sun makes a tan colored holster. I will have to try the coffee and tea as a means of dying my leather projects. Thanks for sharing this with me. Quote

Members jlaudio29 Posted August 27, 2013 Members Report Posted August 27, 2013 Jeanette, how are you applying the dye to the leather? I use an airbrush, and id start with a half full body of reducer, and add the ox blood to it until i get the right color. Quote
Members Jeanette Posted August 27, 2013 Members Report Posted August 27, 2013 I was applying it with one of those sponge (round) brush's...it did work better by using 1/2 bottle of reducer then adding a little oxblood...I have also ordered a premixed pink leather dye ..Zeli Pro Leather dye. Has anyone used that brand? Quote
