georgeandgracie Report post Posted June 8, 2013 Does sewing waxed fabric (cotton or canvas) require needles designed for leather sewing? Janet
Diezell Report post Posted June 11, 2013 I've just finished a top for a m3a1 halftrack, up to 9 layers army canvas. I used a needle with a round tip. I wouldn't use a leather type needle for this material.
georgeandgracie Report post Posted June 11, 2013 Having no leather needles for my Consew, I tried the leather- needle concept using my little Singer. There was no discernible benefit.
georgeandgracie Report post Posted June 11, 2013 I don't suppose this squishing-out could be caused by too much presser foot pressure?
Gump Report post Posted June 28, 2013 Leather point needles have a slicing effect on material being sewn, not advisable on cloth. Round or ball point are for cloth. Gump
gottaknow Report post Posted July 3, 2013 We're making oilcloth jackets in the factory right now. I use a regular point needle but have dropped down a size on most operations. One nice thing is the wax coating lubes the needles and reduces needle heat. Using a leather point on this material will destroy it. georgeandgracie Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Thank you, Eric and Gump. There will be no further experiments with leather-type needles on my part, not with fabric anyway.
