Members 276ccm Posted June 10, 2013 Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) Hi there, havent been able to check in for a while, but now I am :-) I bought this carving tool (see picture) in a leather craft store in Norway.. and I have a few questions. Does anyone know if this is especially made for leather, or is it the same as small/fine carving tools for wood carving. Mine is super sharp, and stays pretty sharp too, so I guess the steel is pretty hard. What is this tool actually called, when searching on eBay or other places? If it is the same as wood carving tool, are they sharpened the same way? And last, does anyone have links to online stores, where to find high quality carving tools like this, which is good for leather carving? This one is about 4 mm at the widest on the blade and makes a V cut.. I also like the bend on it, so it´s easy to control. I´m looking for similar and other small ones with different degrees of the V and some small U shaped.. and it has to be pretty small like this to fit good in my hand. The total length of this one is about 4,5 inches. Any suggestions? Edited June 10, 2013 by 276ccm Quote
Members chancey77 Posted June 10, 2013 Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) That is a wood carving tool. But I have several I use for leather...so obviously it works so USE IT! Edited June 10, 2013 by chancey77 Quote
Members Cyberthrasher Posted June 10, 2013 Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 I have no idea about it's intended purpose, but I would look around at various leather gouges and see if something like that might be available in different sizes. Quote
Members 276ccm Posted June 10, 2013 Author Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 Thanks for a quick reply :-) The tool at the picture is hand made, so I understand it can be hard to guess what it´s actually made for, what I actually ment to ask was, is there tools like this made especially for leather, that anyone know, or if it was the same as wood carving tool in general. I have some cheap wood carving tools laying around, but they are almost impossible to keep super sharp and I guess they are crap.. is there any special brand of tools with high quality steel that anyone can suggest? :-) Marius Quote

Yeah, they're actually called gouges. There are some called "V gouges" which I doubt will suit your needs, but there are others available that are more freehand in nature like the one you have here. There are adjustable gouges like this one http://www.amazon.com/Tandy-Leather-Adjustable-V-Gouge-31811-00/dp/B003VLDSFE and you can also look at various freehand groovers http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/product/craftool-freehand-stitching-groover-88074-11.aspx Quote
Members 276ccm Posted June 10, 2013 Author Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) Thanks "cybertrasher" I have several versions of both the tools you linked to, so I´m mostly interested in similar tools as pictured at the top that looks like wood carving tools, in palm size (if that makes sense) with a bent/bowed "blade" :-) Edited June 10, 2013 by 276ccm Quote
Members Cyberthrasher Posted June 10, 2013 Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 Yeah, about the best I can say is to look at wood carving tools. There are probably a lot more options there. Quote
Members 276ccm Posted June 10, 2013 Author Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 Anyone, feel free to suggest one if you know or have experience with a top quality tool, more or less similar to this (picture above) :-) I would rather have one very good than two medium.. Quote

Members 276ccm Posted June 10, 2013 Author Members Report Posted June 10, 2013 Thanks for the links Tom! Do you (or anyone else) have any experience with any of these? The one I bought, I paid about $90 for it in Norway.. but I knew it was top quality and I had tested it a little. I have found quite a few on eBay and other places too, but I don´t know their quality as i have no experience with these tools, exept the one I already bought, which is hand made. I guess it´s like other leather knifes.. the better the steel is, the sharper cut and it keeps sharp for a while. Quote
