A Video To Help Understand And Select A Machine For Leather>>>>>

Recommended Posts

Just a video for anyone that needs help understanding why some machines are just wrong for leather. It doesn't include the 441 clone, but Wiz has that covered in his sticky along with all this same info. I just added this video for those that need to learn visually. Hope this helps!

Massive thumbs up, someone who knows what they are doing, and covering a lot of ground. Very informative video. Thanks for sharing.

No problem. I figured it would help a few people out. I read Wiz whole post when I 1st joined. Some of it had me still lost, but the more I learned and went back to his post the more it made sense.

I figured this video would help others understand more when reading info about machines.

Malik, thank you so much for the comprehensive tutorial! It was really helpful for a beginner like me. I also appreciate your "push for quality" approach, and willingness to teach. Please do keep on making videos.

(P.s. your glasses are awesome)

I wish I was the one to thank, but I am learning like most of us. That video was done by Arthur Porter. Subscribe to his page to keep up with new videos.

Great video. Can you recommend a compact walking foot. I am already out of space, sewing bags ."

Thanks elizabeth

Sailrite sells a beefed up portable walking foot machine that is probably as good as you can get, in that class. Earlier models were not as strong. These are dual feed machines, with teeth of the bottom of the outer presser foot. The outside foot pulls the top layer in sync with the feed dog on the bottom. They are good for sewing 1/4 inch of material, with #92 thread (possibly #138). You would need the Monster Wheel 2 accessory to punch through leather at low speeds and to maintain those speeds. This adds another $115 to the cost, which is already around $730 for the straight stitch version.

I see that Sailrite now sells a smooth bottom presser foot for $40, which they call a leather foot. The type of leather they refer to in the product description is upholstery leather, not belts. If your bags are of soft leather, this machine might be able to sew them.

On the other hand, if it turns out that you need a cylinder arm machine, rather than a flat bed, the portables are out. You'll need to get an industrial machine on a pedestal table.
