Working With Oil Tanned Leather Question.

I have a request to make a simple messenger bag and I have some oil tanned on the way for it.

The supplier suggested I line the bag, as oil from the leather may seep onto the contents of it...my question is, will a fabric of some sort be adequate lining or must it be leather?

I was thinking maybe some duck canvass material would do well.

Comments, suggestions??

Would wait and see how "oily" it is. would think the fabric canvas would take care of any oil rub off.

I used a Tandy Mustang oiled leather that is fine, is stored wrapped in brown butchers paper with no oil transfer. I also carry a Chromexel wallet in dress pants and not seen any oil staining. It will depend on your leather so test it out first.

love the look and feel of oil tanned leather it is some of my favourite for sure

I would describe Chromexel as waxy rather than oily. It feels and smells great, really nice stuff!

What color is it???

I have a chocolate brown roll that is much waxier than a black roll.

Yep, that's where I ordered it....also because you can buy by the sq. ft. so I only ordered what I thought I needed.

Can u dye the fresh side with chromexcel ? I got some that's too light on the flesh side and I don't really want to line it

Now that is a tip worthy of acknowledgment; no matter if it's oil tanned or not. The paper would help with light darkening on Veg tanned too. Thanks Scott!

Chromexel is waxy and dark brown in the back. Some other Horween leathers are lighter though.

I would skive a test patch of the flesh side and try your stain out on it. I successfully edge painted some CXL with brown Feibings edge coat.

I have carried a oil tanned Knife sheath on my hip for months with no apparent bleed out on my clothes or light tan belt. I also have several customers that reorder oil tanned sheaths, so I assume that there is no problem. You can wrap the leather in a paper towel and press it and see some bleed out. It does bleed out when I press a makers mark in it. Hope this helps. -- Tex

Chromexel is waxy and dark brown in the back. Some other Horween leathers are lighter though.

The last brown chromexcel I got was dark on the back but this last one is like a lighter grey ish brown I got them both from Springfield as wallet backs maybe its durby or what ever else they have
