RoyalLeatherDesigns Report post Posted September 22, 2013 I contemplating on buying leather tools, I recently bough a Cyclone and want to match the quality of my stitcher to my hand tools. My mom would always tell us when we were kids that a tool is just a tool and a 1 dollar tool will do what a 100 dollar tool will do so save 99 dollars. My dad was different he always tell us it's the quality of tool that matters so he would buy snap on tools and my mom would be really pissed all the time. My dad had a thing about tools and he bought so may that eve naturally my parents divorced......sorry I went of topic but I am looking for the best leather hand tools I'm like my dad. I know Barry King has really good tools but are Ron's much better I am still going to buy tools from Barry being that he has a larger selection. Is Ron still making tools I read on a post he had retired is that correct? Are there any other tools makers that will match these gentlemen's craftsmanship. Frank Report post Posted September 22, 2013 Ron's tools is still up and running. A fellow by the name of Toby Yoder took over the business and I have since bought tools from them. They do not come with a sharpening file, but the correct size rod to use when sharpening them. You just put some extra fine wet dry paper or croaker cloth over them and sharpen that way. RiverCity Report post Posted September 22, 2013 Barry Kings tools are top notch, you can't go wrong with him. As far as tools go, buy the best that you can comfortably afford. They will serve you better in the long run. Cheap tools get bought and rebought for as much or more than higher quality tools would have cost in the beginning. Frank Report post Posted September 22, 2013 Ron's does have a large selection of french edges, round edge edgers, Montana edgers, horn trimmers, and stuff like that. camano ridge Report post Posted September 22, 2013 Thing that makes circles = wing dividers or compass. Adjustable thing on the side = adjustable stitch groover. Picture one is the Douglas Versa groover. I just got one and the more I use it the more I like it. The downside is that they are expensive. I got lucky and got mine on the used market in like new condition for half the price of new. The second picture is of the Tandy Pro groover. It works well and I have used it a great deal until I got the Douglas. I have found in some applications (I know it's Heresy) that I like the Tandy better because there is more to hold onto for control. It just depends on your budget and personal likes.
