No Fume Leather Glue?

Is the a good contact cement/ glue for leather that does not have the over powering fumes of products like weldwood etc? Winter is coming soon (even here in the desert) and the garage door will have to stay closed most of the time. I also use a propane space heater to take the chill out and I really don't want brain damaging, flammable fumes in a enclosed space.

I just use PVA glue, no smell and plenty strong enough to hold pieces together for stitching

Hello Jeff,

I have recently tried Weldwoods non-flammable contact cement and so far it seems to be okay. Will subject it to stress in next few days.

No fumes is something that is great for me, working in an enclosed small area of my shop.

Hope you find something that works for you. I enjoy trying many different products so will also be working with more as time goes on.

The latex water based contact cements are all good for leather. Do a search, there are other threads on this subject.

Ordinary PVA glues are okay. White glue is flexible after it sets. Yellow glue used for woodwork is not flexible when sets. So when you bend the item, you will hear it cracking. Still holds the leather together. Won't be as strong a joint, and is a bit disconcerting to hear the cracking sound. After several bends, most of the noise stops. But, just use white glue and avoid the issue.

About five years ago, I switched from contact cement to white glue to escape the hazardous fumes. (Plus, contact cement is twice the work, since you need to apply it to both pieces of leather to be joined.) I've done lots of adhesion tests with both veg-tan and chrome-tan leathers, and found that once white glue is fully set -- about 24 hours -- it's very nearly as strong as the best contact cement. My favorite white glue is Leather Weld from Tandy.

You would need to give them a call as we order glues,dyes,etc by the case...Hope this will help you out..
