Members El Zipster Posted December 12, 2013 Members Report Posted December 12, 2013 As I said, I prefer to use the clam in a vertical plane so, I went for a Locking Mechanism, a parallel guide (to aid lateral stability), the leg in ash instead of saple, and the reinforced and profiled saple jaws. Oh and the magnets to rest the needles and a storage bag. Cheers Zip Quote
Members ToddB 68 Posted December 26, 2013 Members Report Posted December 26, 2013 DavidL , I found the following You Tube video, showing how to build your own Stitching Pony. This simple design would be easy to do, very low cost and you would have the pride of making it yourself ! If you are "all thumbs" when it comes to a DIY project and/or don't have the tools, perhaps a friend could help. Like they say "Where there's a will, there's a way !" Just type the following into your favorite search engine window (Google, Yahoo, etc., etc.) and make sure the volume is up enough on your speaker system. "Making a Leatherworkers Clamp or Stitching Pony, by Harry Rogers" This video was originally published on Sept. 12, 2013. Happy Holidays and Good Luck ! ToddB68 Quote
Members ToddB 68 Posted December 27, 2013 Members Report Posted December 27, 2013 (edited) DAVIDL.........BTW, in the You Tube video "Making a Leatherworkers Clamp or Stitching Pony, by Harry Rogers, he mentions the cost as being 2 or 3 Quid. I would assume that was just for the hardware (Bolts, etc.), since he already had the glue, hand tools and power tools. Now, like we in the USA nicknamed our dollar a "Buck", the British nicknamed their pound a "Quid". So, the quid is a pound. At the current exchange rate you might expect to spend 1.64 pounds x 3 USD, or around $5.00, if you could find some free wood cut-offs as he did ! Anyhow, this would be the most economical way to go outside of someone giving you a Stitching Pony absolutely FREE ! ToddB68 Edited December 27, 2013 by ToddB68 Quote
Members Crimson Hides Posted January 25, 2014 Members Report Posted January 25, 2014 Maybe you can consider the stitching clamp from Elfita, they are made in Korea. http://elfitakorea.blogspot.ae/2013/08/walnut-clamp.html Quote

Members SLudlow Posted January 31, 2014 Members Report Posted January 31, 2014 We are currently in the process of designing a set of folding clams that should retail for about $140, not including shipping. Variations and customizations are available for a small fee. Members grail Posted August 9, 2019 Members Report Posted August 9, 2019 I just sold a Fred Moreau clam for $850 and it did not have many add on extras. If you ever find one and want it - better get it because they are exceedingly rare. Fred's clams were built and designed to be Rolls Royce of stitching clams and well worth the price. Fred is not making them anymore due to poor health. I'll leave it at that. Quote
Members Klara Posted April 13, 2021 Members Report Posted April 13, 2021 Just wanted to say that if you are able to calculate angles and saw them correctly, then a French style stitching clam is easy enough to make. Just "steal" the shape from a picture and create it out of straight oieces of wood. Then all you need is wood glue, some screws and a hinge. (If, like me, you have problems with geometry and precision sawing, it will take a bit of fiddling with saw and file, but you will still get a useable clamp, just spend mire time.) Quote
