Troy Burch Report post Posted February 2, 2014 That looks real nice. I suggest you don't use supersheen or any high gloss finish, the light will reflect off of it to much and you'll only get a nice view in just certain areas of the room. I learned this the hard way and had to take them down and refinish them, except were you want the wet look, eyes, noses ect.. Looking at the picture it already has a nice sheen when light hits it. Turn n Burn Report post Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Thank you everyone for the complimentswith and a special thanks to Troy yoir advise saved me alot of time and experimenting. Should have asked what you would use for the body went with the guy from tandys advice and I liked how the antique looked on the hawk so went with it, I also have a 3 year old boy with me half the time so being able to use it inside when he goes to bed is helpful especially with this cold winter Edited February 5, 2014 by Turn n Burn
Turn n Burn Report post Posted February 5, 2014 Had a interesing mistake happen thought I would try some sharpie on the eye added some yellow then thought of using CA glue too build up the eye and make it glossy. Apparently it reacted with the yellow but not the green/yellow or anynother I had on hand didnt get a pic of the eye looked kinda cool but not what Im looking for. But they do or could look like vary realistic blood drops.
Troy Burch Report post Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) That looks awesome,I would have never thought you could get three shades of brown from black antique. lol, I'll be needing step by step instructions. How did you keep the gel from wipeing off to much with the blockout on it? Edited February 6, 2014 by Troy Burch
Turn n Burn Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Thanks again troy I didnt use blockout on everything just the light browns on the wing tips and just let it soke in good wiped areas I wanted to be lighter had a bit of water on hand to thin it out a bit to soak in and get a bit lighter shade accually worked really good dont think I would get the same results painting. Turn n Burn Report post Posted March 24, 2014 Need a little help with inspiration for this was going to stich it to plywood. Not so sure I like that idea anymore. I do like your idea of using a round or oval with bark on it but having a tough time finding one 24"or more in diameter which is what I will need for the length of this. Thought of using as an inlay but because of all the cuts thru the grain I dont thinkbit will weather well and I dont think it would where well so looking more at as a wall hanging. Any ideas or critic's welcome
Northmount Report post Posted March 24, 2014 Take a slice on an angle through a log. Diameter only needs to be as wide as the width you want. your angle can be as acute as needed to get the length. Tom
Troy Burch Report post Posted March 24, 2014 (edited) Yep, Northmount's got it right. Grap your chain saw, find a tree that's the right wideth and make a long angle cut. It'll be worth the effort. I polyurethane mine to help keep the bark from coming off. Edited March 24, 2014 by Troy Burch
Troy Burch Report post Posted March 24, 2014 Had a secound thought, What do you think about cutting the eagle out of the excess leather and letting parts of the tail and wing extend beyond the round? lol I'll shut up now.
