Members Shorts Posted October 15, 2008 Members Report Posted October 15, 2008 I'm putting together my first belt and I'm stumped on how to attach a keeper. I am using chicago screws to secure the foldover at the buckle so I will not be stitching a keeper there. I do not have any metal keepers to use. I am making this a double layer belt. Would it be possible to stitch the keeper between the layers? Is that durable? Quote
Contributing Member Jordan Posted October 15, 2008 Contributing Member Report Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) you can place the keeper between the chicago screws or sew it between the layers either way will work. Sewing it will be very solid where as sewing it to itself and having it loose between the screws will make it removable.Depends on the buckle also. a full one like a clipcorner sometimes does not need a keeper where as a half one does, if that makes sense. ArtS Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 You can handle it just like a metal keeper. Just make your leather loop and put it between the layers and between the screws. I use staples to keep my loops together most of the time but you can also sew them. Here are some pictures with a metal loop. Art Quote
Members Shorts Posted October 15, 2008 Author Members Report Posted October 15, 2008 Thanks for the pics Art. I might start ordering metal keepers just for ease of attachment. You mentioned staples, I was wondering what kind to use if I went that option. Since I wasn't planning on sewing the keeper, I was unsure of how to keep the keeper ends together and from sliding out. Jordan, makes perfect sense. I am reading that you're talking about the heel bar buckles vs the center bar buckles Oh, I'm making just a simple gun belt, double layer of 7/8oz leather, stitched all the way around, with a nickel heel bar buckle and leather keeper This one is a treat to myself and it'll also serve as my prototype to go with my holsters and mag pouches. ArtS Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I use brass loop staples from Weaver. I don't know if they are available anywhere else but I'm sure that they are. You could also use a heavy duty stapler to staple the ends together. Art Quote

Art they can be a little tricky to find...theres weaver like art said but i think its a 1000 qty minimum...then you can also get them at springfield leather...in 100 qty a pack or larger quantities of course... darryl Quote

I just used my target/range staple gun and put one in the end, then I used pliers to really squeeze down the ends. Hopefully the staple doesn't wear the leather enough to tear too soon. If it does, well, I'll just staple another keeper together and replace it Quote
