Do You Know What Kind Of Disks These Are?

A friend sold me this homemade hammer for $10. I love it. It seems the head is formed from several 'plasticish' disks put together. Do you know what they are and where to find them? Thanks!!

My guess would be HDPE. (High Density Polyethylene) It comes in a sheet (available in different thicknesses) and you cut the disks out of the sheet.

That's how I would go about it at least!

Sure looks like the disks I cut from a cutting board I bought at Wally world for about $5. You can get 4 or 5 disks out of one board.

You can also purchase ultra high molecular weight [uHMW] poly in a round form, in any diameter you wish, and drill a hole from end to end and have a solid mallet. The piece I purchased cost $6/ft. for 2" dia. It is commonly used by stone masons for their hammers as it won't round over the ends of their chisels. It is extremely tough and doesn't mark easily. It has nice density and provides a solid blow with little effort. Gump.

McMaster-Carr is a great place to buy raw material like GUMP mentioned. I build guitars, and I save a lot of money making my own pickguards from scratch by purchasing the raw materials from McMaster-Carr.
