Members Shorts Posted October 21, 2008 Members Report Posted October 21, 2008 I noticed on many casual/fashion belts there is stitching running the border, but the belt is a single layer of leather. Is that done for any functional purpose or is it purely aesthetics? Quote

Members JRedding Posted October 21, 2008 Members Report Posted October 21, 2008 The reason for the stitching is it doies make the belt look nicer, and the stitch also helps to minimize any stretch that may occur Arvis Quote
Members Shorts Posted October 21, 2008 Author Members Report Posted October 21, 2008 Arvis, I had wondered if "containing the stretch factor" was a possible case Thanks guys Quote
Members Rayban Posted October 21, 2008 Members Report Posted October 21, 2008 I bet you wouldn't see much of it if it had to be hand stitched.....and stretch on a belt can be a good thing, huh fellas?? Quote Raybanwww.rgleather.net

Not on a single layer I'd make lol I hand stitched my gun belt and let me tell you 9+ yards of thread is craziness - and it was necessary! I don't think I'm going to fiddle with that for "unnecessary" LOL Quote
TomSwede Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I'm gonna handstitch a 5" wide bassguitarstrap. Could go with out it but customers demand. I charge per hour and he is informed about the extra time/costs. Beside that I need to practice both stitching and the groover tool. For my own use I think I might have had it stitched because I like it but a nice tooled border is also a possibility, depends on motifs and design. Members Shorts Posted October 21, 2008 Author Members Report Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) That's a lot of stitching Tom. Get your fingers and wrists all warmed up! In the 78" of total stitching I had to lay, there was nearly 400 stitches total. I spread it out over several days. I lost track of the hours since I worked on it pieces at a time. But it was over 3hrs and took much longer than my holsters holsters. And that was just a 33.5" belt for myself! Can't imagine one for the uh, full grown man! Anyhow, I think of stitching the belt was like climbing Mt Fuji. I'm glad I did it once to experience it and I'll never do it again! You're right though, the design makes a pretty big difference on what's gotta be done. Post up the bass strap when you get it all done. Edited October 21, 2008 by Shorts Quote
