mason HFFH Report post Posted August 7, 2014 Hello . Ive been trying to find resources on making leather get back whips and most of what I can find is the nonsense paracord ones . Does anyone know the size of lace needed and the size of nylon inner cord needed and termination methods . They use some kind of wrap on either end of them . Also im looking for a good lace distributor for many colors of lace . Im new to braiding and looking for advice . And btw before I. Preached to about the MC thing I am in a serious club that has been around since the 40's . Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
TXAG Report post Posted August 7, 2014 There are books written with this information...far too complicated to cover in a single post here. If you search, there are quite a few threads that discuss the questions you asked, but none are as complete as the books I've seen written on building bullwhips (and stock whips, etc.). The "wrap on either end" of the whip...are you talking about the turkshead knots? Those are typically used on both ends of the whip handle. Takes a while to learn how to tie those if you're starting from scratch. Again, there are many great books to learn from...I usually use youtube also and some folks on there have great how-to videos for various types of turkshead knots. For lace, I'll send you a PM -- mainly because I have a list of people to AVOID buying lace from and don't feel like arguing with others on here about that. (And one or two sellers who I can recommend highly)
mason HFFH Report post Posted August 7, 2014 Thanks for the reply . And its knot a turks head knot its more of a type of heat shrinkable tape of some sort . Im trying to avoid buying a whip to dissect . The size of the nylon core and lace size that is mainly used is what I can not find and youtube has let me down .I do have a braiding book but I want to be sure of my sizes before I order material. Thanks so much
billybopp Report post Posted August 7, 2014 I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for, but you may be talking about heat shrink tubing. It's usually used in electrical/electronics work. While usually smaller sized, it's available in up to 2" diameter ( and maybe even more) before heat shrinking if you look around for it. It does get a little pricey as sizes go up, but it may be just what you need. I have not used this vendor, but they have quite a variety: http://www.heatshrink.com/pc_combined_results.asp?pc_id=07855A7E161D497D9D2DBC838C223506 There may be others, and possibly less $$. Just look around! Hope that helps Bill

billybopp Report post Posted August 7, 2014 Gotcha now! What looks like shrink wrap is probably leather lace that is stretched tightly around the whip. Think wrapping the handle of a baseball bat, or maybe a golf club. Springfield leather has some lace in 5/32 silver mylar lace as well as black lace that might work for you, although that might be a little skinny for what you want to do. Your best bet might be to get some garment leather and cut your own lace from it. Again, Springfield has some metalics as does Tandy and I'm sure other places. For small quantities, a nice sharp knife, a straight edge and some careful work will make nice laces of whatever width you'd like. They also make specialized lace cutters which might be helpful if you intend to make a bunch of these with your own cut lace. Tinkerton Report post Posted August 9, 2014 http://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/home/department/books-patterns/lacing-braiding/66021-00.aspx I have this book and I've found it to be very helpfull as well as easy to follow. This one is decent too, but I found I had to go through and colour-code the diagrams to make them easier to follow. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca/en-cad/home/department/books-patterns/lacing-braiding/6022-00.aspx Cheers, Tinkerton
TXAG Report post Posted August 11, 2014 Friends don't let friends buy from Tandy... Both of those books are much cheaper on Amazon...(about half the cost of Tandy in both cases...) http://www.amazon.com/Braiding-Fine-Leather-Techniques-Australian/dp/0870335448/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407780177&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Braiding-reprint-Bruce-Grant/dp/087033039X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1407780177&sr=8-
