Members heybro Posted August 21, 2014 Members Report Posted August 21, 2014 Hello! I need a leather blanket or leather sleeping bag. Specifics to be determined. Ideally, the sleeping bag would be leather inside and out. A full hide would be awesome perhaps with a seam, if needed, where the bag is folded over vertically along the side. A zipper along the edges. This way the bag can be zipped or unzipped and laid out flat like a blanket. -or- Simply a large leather blanket leather on both sides. Please send experience and vision including potential challenges and questions. Thank You. Quote
Members hillbilly jack Posted August 21, 2014 Members Report Posted August 21, 2014 do you realize the cost of such a project Quote
Members Rohn Posted August 22, 2014 Members Report Posted August 22, 2014 I agree with Hillbilly Jack the cost would be astronomical. Besides it would be very heavy and would hold body moisture in. I wonder how you would use something like that. Quote Rohn(John 8:32) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (KJV)

It's not impossible, but quite cost prohibitive. I'd imagine that sewing together a bunch of shearling hides, lining the back with a nice wool fabric, and then filling bit of batting/down would have a better overall effect. It's possible that a bunch of sections of suede for the inside and outside filled with down/batting might be doable, too. The big questions are why and what exactly are you trying to accomplish. I am not saying that you can't do something like that, just that there might be a better direction that is more cost effective. Especially considering the price of a single side and that it would quite a few depending on the finial size you choose. Quote
Members heybro Posted August 25, 2014 Author Members Report Posted August 25, 2014 Dear Friends, The average of the estimates I am getting is around $2,000.00. I've got three companies/people currently ready to do this...and two others who have said yes but have not given an estimate yet. I know it is unusual, but sometimes people will pay a lot for something very specific that they would like to have. Thank You. Maybe I'll post pictures once I have it for anyone interested! Quote
Members Rohn Posted August 26, 2014 Members Report Posted August 26, 2014 Heybro, I'm glad to hear that you have someone that has the expertise to do your work. I certainly would like to see some photos of the finished product. I hope it turns out even better than you expected. Members johnv474 Posted August 26, 2014 Members Report Posted August 26, 2014 It can be done for less, but it would depend on the specific materials you want. A full hide with shearlings that are stitched together to fully line it would do the job, and be more comfortable than leather interior, though of course that is an option also. Also, snaps may be easier than a full zipper, if that is not an absolute requirement. I think it would look awesome. I would recommend shearling as opposed to wool stuffing to avoid shifting. Quote
